So in hindsight was the PS3 a flop or a success?

If we're going by only finical numbers then a massive flop.

it sold really well though

cant believe someone really made that image

Titanic flop.

It was sold at a loss when it first launched, and Sony were almost certainly expecting sales figures in the same region of the PS2, which it never got close to.

PS3 sold 84 million units. I don't think they earned all that much considering they had to lower the price early on. Wii U on the other hand was a massive flop.

>BUT NINTENDO
Obsessed

Dude, I own every Nintendo console. Just saying as it is. Switch is a colossal success in contrast.

it only looks like a failure comparatively when you look at other ps consoles which were far more succesful, if you try to compare with consoles that actually, monumentally failed (like the 3do, n64, jaguar, gamecube, dreamcast etc) then it actually was decently succesful
t. former snoy, now switch owner

cant even imagine the entity that bothered to make this image

It was a disaster for Sony. Along with all their other divisions being shit, the PS3 almost fucking bankrupted them.

It cost about $800 to manufacture (due to Bluray players being so new and costly at the time) and they were selling for $599 - well above the $500 turnoff point for most consumers.

And the games were shit. The online was shit. The hacking scandal. The fact they utterly bootyblasted by Nintendo's little Wii system.

They might have turned the sales around by the end of the gen and finally got some good games but the whole picture was a shitshow for Sony.

Thankfully they learned and got their act together with the PS4.

>Thankfully they learned and got their act together with the PS4.
I think it had more to do with PS4 not having any real competition than it being a competent console.
Not that it is bad, but it was released during a pretty good time. It had Wii U to and Xbox One to compete against and I mean... come on.

The PS2 sold 155 million units. It was and still is the best-selling console of all time. The PS3 performed a little over half as well, while an upstart in the market that sold 15% of what Sony sold in the previous generation saw sales go up 358%, devouring PlayStation market share. The PS3 did edge out the 360 in total units shipped, but only in the last months of the generation, in January 2013. I am certain that in 2006 Sony did not expect to sell a mere million more units than the Xbox. No doubt they were dismayed.

The amount of seething ass frustration required to make that image is inconceivable

Stop crying for a international company

>I think it had more to do with PS4 not having any real competition

Yeah you're right.

There's always this cycle of arrogance.

Nintendo gets cocky gets fucked by Sony.

Sony gets cocked. Gets fucked by Nintendo and Microsoft.

Nintendo and Microsoft got cocky. Both get fucked by Sony.

Both Sony and Nintendo are feeling cocky at the moment....

>Sony takes something that's popular and improves upon it

Wow how evil

sony did the camera first

It was sold at a loss for most of its lifetime. Even a glimpse at Sony's financial reports from the time show how much of a disaster it really was.
That combined with the 2007 recession was for Sony the equivalent of getting hit by a fucking train.
There's a good reason people thought they might've gone bankrupt around that time.

i dont remember anyone making fun of the xbox hard drive

Compared to the PS2? It flopped.

If in quality, it's great as long as you got it in the 2nd half. Ps4 though has been shit though in comparison, I hope 5 is better but after how well the ps4 has been it's time for sony to get conceited again.

The PS2 also had an optional HDD and online.

Paying a subscrption to be able to play online is still the most retarded thing ever.

What were Sony even trying with the PS3? They must have seen that it would become hugely unprofitable?
Did they expect to make it back by making Blu-Ray win the media format? Or did they simply miscalculate and expected people to care more about the features of the PS3 than they did and expect it to sell much better and make money from selling games? Or did Sony simply not pay attention to profits and money at the time and did it because they wanted to?

The PS2 was a massive success in part because it was a cheap DVD player for many kids.

Sony thought they could trojan horse their own proprietary medium (BluRay) into people's homes using the PS3. Kinda makes you wonder what things would have been like if PS3 just had a standard DVDdrive and sold for $299. Things might have been so different.

Big tech conglomerates tend to fall into the DUDE ROYALTIES FREE MONEY trap. They figured that it was okay to lose billions now if they make them back ten times over in royalties without having to do anything.

I hate that the years are not ordered in year. What massive fucking sperg was so mad that they made this image and just picking the years and arguments out of the blue. Fuck this im out.

I remember the very first meme. Now look at every one of you faggots. Hypocrites.

Flop. Everything else is moving goalposts since it lacked in every department.

It sold very poorly when it was selling at a loss and made most of it's sales when cheaper models were released. It also ultimately sold more units than the Xbox 360.

Compared to the PS2, there hasn't been a home console that has succeeded other than the PS2.
