Redpill me on 1440p

I'm looking to buy a new 144Hz/IPS screen and I can't decide on the resolution. I only see advantages in 1080p:
>two times cheaper
>easier to make use of the higher refresh rate
>my GPU will last longer, because higher fps
>it's still the standard for movies that are not 4K

Is the bump in fidelity really that impressive with 1440p? Since I'm looking at 27", is the bigger screen a problem in fast-paced FPS games?

>my GPU will last longer, because higher fps

He's not wrong though. Hitting whatever threshold you deem playable is obviously easier on lower resolutions, therefore increasing the "lifespan" of your card until you need to upgrade.

I use 1440p because it gives a lot more desktop space. It does look better of course, and for me it's the logical step towards high-res that isn't as huge as 4k, but it's also true that it's way more demanding. Also at least on my screen, playing at 1080p looks like absolute garbage so I'm forced to do 1440p anyway.
Save up for the 3070 though and you won't have an issue.

>is the bigger screen a problem in fast-paced FPS games?
I can assure you that you are not good enough at fast-paced FPS for this to matter in the slightest.

Why is BDO for this particular monitor? Was it cross promotion or something? They don't even have that outfit available in game anymore.

Just stick with 1080p/60fps, its fine.

Save your money to get out of the cities and buy a house before its too late.

1440p looks great, 1080p looks like shit to me now.
Also its 2020, aren't you fuckers tired of playing in 1080p by now? over 10 years of this shit

In my experience going from 1080p to 1440p was a noticeable bump in picture quality. Especially if your monitor has great dynamic range (darks look good, nice contrast, etc) it's worth it to go up to 1440p. However I often times switch my games to run at 1080p to reach the 140fps because my GPU is ancient. Both the higher resolution and refresh rate is still worth it imo, even if I use both separately most of the time

4k gaming monitors are a meme

Once you go 1440p, you can never go back.

Why would I get tired of a screen resolution? Fine a better hobby faggot.

>not ultrawide
Cuh-ringe!

more pixels means shit looks nicer
1440p on low > 1080p on ultra imo

>Buying RTX 3090 for work
>Have a 144Hz 1080p monitor
>Check out 4k monitors for gaming
>Almost $300 minimum

Is 4k worth it or is it a meme? I've always leaned towards frame rate for gaming. In my opinion, fps matters for gaming and resolution matters for movies.

why the fuck would you buy 1080p, as resolution that is literally over a decade old?
if you get 144hz and ips you should definitely go for 1440p

I could never go back to 1080p after playing at 1440p (27inch) for the last couple of years.

It's so much more crisp and detailed. I have a msi gtx 1080 gaming x and it's run pretty much everything high/ultra at least 60fps.

I'll be buying a 3080 and sticking with 1440p, I feel like 4k is a meme. Although maybe I wouldn't think that if I actually played at it.

What's your GPU? If you have the budget I'd grab the 1440p and play at 60fps until you upgrade the gpu and push up to 144hz.

Can you go into a shop and see if you notice the difference?

>tfw BDO looks like absolute shit while maxed out

>>Almost $300 minimum
lmao
a good monitor is at least €$500-600+
a proper 4k or 21:9 monitor is over €$900

4k is a meme; BUT, if you can afford a 3090, and you clearly don't give a shit about money, 4k is fine.

>1,5k for a gpu? sounds like a great deal!
>wtf over 300 dollars for a monitor with 4 times the pixel count? fucking scammers!
why are you faggots like this? out of all the components in your setup monitor is the thing you actually stare at but noooo, using over 50 dollars is way too much.

Have you ever seen a game at 4k with high settings? It looks really good. Like REALLY good

Higher res gets rid of jaggies more in certain games.

>he has no money

Resolution is one thing but once you try 144hz you can never go back 60hz.

It looks fucking amazing maxed out, it just runs like shit with a fuckton of pop-in. But I've spent hours taking screenshots of my BDO waifu

Gayming monitah

>a resolution that is literally over a decade old
>resolution
>decade old
This is full fucking retard

3070 will be too pricey for me considering the 1440p/144hz/IPS monitors cost €400+ in my region and I'm not not sure if 3060 will last me longer than a few years at that resolution.
From what I've seen most IPS gaming panels sacrifice HDR and contrast for better response times.
That was my thought process, but it doesn't seem like 1440p is replacing 1080p the same way 720p got dropped fast in the previous decade.
I can only afford a 3060 (assuming $400). Judging by the current charts it should be have about the same performance as a 2080S.

>IPS
Fucking why? Only professional image editors actually benefit from that shit. Just get a VA panel.

how was 720p "dropped"? nothing's stopping anyone from setting the resolution to 1280x720 in any game they please.

t.retard

Retard. The 3090 is a necessity for rendering. A 4k monitor would just be a luxury. I'm asking so I know if I should bother with 4k monitors. If it's a big meme I'd rather look at the 240Hz monitors

the bigger screen is definitely a problem in competitive games, people with a smaller screen will have an edge over you
unless you're a graphic fag go for a 240hz monitor, fps are what makes a real difference

The opposite. Some games, especially japanese ones, don't work right on frames higher than 60. Messes up input windows and shit. When I lock them to 60 I notice the difference for all of like 10 seconds and then it feels smooth again.
Resolution on the other hand is always noticeably more blurry when turned down.

The higher the pixel count of your screen the shittier lower res is going to look, unless you upscale is somehow.

If your budget is only $400 then stick to 1080p high refresh you retard.

A 5700xt or a 2070s will get you 144 - 180 fps in nearly all games at 1080p.

>bought a 1440p
>can't play tons of old games anymore because they don't support this resolution and they look like absolute shit on it

27" is not what I would call a big screen.
30"+ is big and needs a curve to properly see what's happening at the edges.

>"I lock my refresh rate to play shitty japanese ports"

This literal autism is infuriating.

Don’t listen to this guy, IPS or bust dude the quality difference is noticeable

Play them windowed..

720p scales perfectly to 1440p

Pretty sure you would not be able to tell the difference between properly calibrated VA and IPS screens.

Looks like a blurry mess on my 1440p screen. Anything non-1440p looks awful.

>noo the grass is 2% less green than its supposed to be and i can only look at the screen from a 170 degree angle instead of a 179 degree one
Nobody except photo editors benefit from an IPS screen compared to a VA.

Not my fault nips still tie game logic to framerate.

you're just used to higher fidelity then. but like i said the scaling is pixel perfect, no information is lost.

I got the monitor in your image recently. Its pretty nice and because its bigger and higher resolution stuff thats further away in games is easier to see
The vast majority of games are cpu limited these days anyway so you dont loose too much going to 1440p and you don't need the crazy GPU you do for 4k. If the 3070 is actually $500 its not going to be too expensive to power a 1440p monitor either as the 370 is allagedly better than a 2080ti (You could even pick up a cheap 2080ti soon as the prices are plummeting)

Why aren't you still playing on a shitty tube tv then faggot

ok poortard. I had TN and VA before. IPS is miles better than both

>inb4 muh 1ms vs 4ms
that's the real unnoticeable shit you shouldn't care about

VA also has terrible ghosting compred to TN and IPS.

It does, but somehow the contrasts still look great. It's not OLED levels of quality

which VA monitor did you have and which IPS one do you have? you know there's more to the quality of the panel than the screen technology type? there are crappy IPS panels and good IPS panels too.

>IPS is miles better than both
Is really the panel type? Or did you just finally buy a decent monitor after using cheap shit for years?

>Since I'm looking at 27", is the bigger screen a problem in fast-paced FPS games?
This is never a problem with a good adjustable stand that'll allow you to change the viewing distance at-will. Almost all monitors come with VESA mount holes.

1440p is the sweet spot. You'll start punching yourself if you need to turn on DPI scaling. Only thing that 4K got going for it is that you can integer scale down to 1080p. Can only do 720p for a 1440p monitor, but driver image sharpening handles 1080p to 1440p just fine
