8 GB is enough for everything on the consumer market right now short of fringe cases and extreme situations. No one sensible currently needs more than 8 GB of VRAM.
However, it's already confirmed that aftermarket models will have double the ram. So expect to be able to buy a 20GB 3080, or a 48GB 3090.

The bandwidth got doubled though, and maybe they'll do some console tier memory offload to the SSD.
But yes it's still not enough if you're planning to keep this one card for most of nextgen, and I'd recommend waiting for the 3070Ti which supposedly has 16gb vram.

The gtx 980 is a great card but the lack of vram hurts it in modern games. The same thing is gonna happen with these cards. How much vram do the new consoles have? That will determine the requirements.

Great, so now we're in a 700 series situation again where you have to choose between more vram (780 6GB) or more cores (780ti 3GB), or spend a ludicrous amount extra to get both (Titan Black).

3060 is the most important card as it will set the standard for the multi-platform game developers.
