I could never tell if Skellige was really short, or if I was just rushing through it because I really wanted to see where the story was going at this point.

I don't think they were. The game is incredibly poorly written. They couldn't think of anything interesting to fill Novigrad with, so the main quest feels like endless chain of pointless side quests to learn information that should have been incredibly easy to find out ( Ciri raiding the temple square, killing dozens on the way and teleporting in front of witnesses) WHILE the game insists this is of extreme importance and the fate of the world rests upon it. This is a dumb fucking game and it's only praised because CPDR is a meme company.
