A Mario character is almost certainly coming to Smash. Why do I say this? In the presentation earlier today, when they mention Smash, instead of showing footage or anything from the game event like they did with Splatoon and the Mario Kart app, they just showed a generic Smash Ultimate logo. Why? Why not flash a picture of all of the Mario fighters? I’m not saying it’s Geno, but I think a Mario character will be Smash DLC.

If there is a Mario character, they can't be Fighter 77 since they could've been revealed in the Mario Direct or sometime before (and their reveal could've been followed up by Sakurai announcing the tournament himself)
If there is a Mario character, they have to be Fighter 78 at best assuming 78 is coming out before the Mario tournament happens within November or December
If there is a Mario character coming and they come after the tournament for some reason, they have to be revealed before the end of March seeing that's when shit like Super Mario Bros 35 shuts down
The problem with assuming they can come out after the tournament is that Nintendo could've just had the tournament occur in a later time like how Splatoon is having their tournament next year

They never announce characters in series Directs.They save them for a general or announce it outside of a Direct. They could just do it latter. Fun fact, for Mario's 30th, they added the Mario Maker stage to Smash Wii U. It's the only new stage added as DLC that wasn't tied to a character (unless you could Miiverse).
