The Boss isn't a very well-written character. She's alright, but a lot of her dialogue is bad and dumb (like her philosophical rants). It's cool that she's a badass with some female vulnerability that has endured a lot of hardship, but she isn't as complicated as Ellie. There's less going on there.
She's a very conflicted character and the tensions in her personality make her interesting. Part of her loves Joel, part of her hates Joel. Part of her wants justice, part of her wants revenge. Part of her wants to be independent, part of her wants to connect with people. She inherits Joel's qualities but they're at odds with her own qualities which makes her dysfunctional. Interesting characters inner conflict.
