When Pious claims the one Essence of the Ancient you choose, obviously he gets that one.
One of Mantorok's guards entrusts Ellia with Mantorok's Essence, which she safeguards for a millennia until she can pass it on to Lindsey, who entrusts it to Edward, where it ends up with Alex.
But then the path of the last two Essences leaves me questioning. Did Pious also claim the opposing Ancient's Essence? I know he stashed it in the cathedral where Anthony, Paul, and Peter all visited and summoned the Black Guardian to protect it, which Peter then killed and recovered the Essence and gave it to Edward, where it ended up with Alex.
Then as far as I know Karim tracked down the last Essence and guarded it as a ghost for a millennia until Roberto came and inherited it, then was thrown into the Pillar of Flesh and protected it until Michael appeared and retrieved it, then passed it on to Edward, where it ended up with Alex.

So how did the opposing Essence end up in the cathedral? I don't recall Anthony or Paul really having relevance in it, Anthony was tasked with protecting Charlemagne and failed, then passed on the two-handed sword to Paul, who was investigating the cult pretending to be the Inquisition, where he discovered the Black Guardian and was instantly mulched for his findings. So Pious just claimed it? Why not claim the last Essence, which his Ancient claimed to foretell besting in combat once the planets were aligned?
