A mix of nostalgia and love for their game I'd assume. I personally own all rerelease that were announced in the direct and am saddened by the practice of limited time release. They are good games, but fuck nintendo for doing this.

There is an argument to be made for a physical copy having a limited release, but there is literally nothing to forgive for a limited digital release. It is literally something that can exist indefinitely and can be copied ad nauseam but they just slap an arbitrary expiration date.
