To me, there's no reason to think they can't especially when people used to say the same about XBOX, that there was no way Microsoft would release Series X at less than 600, and that Series S would be at least 400, yet here we are.
This is a legit question, if there's any reasonable logic on why you think Sony can't do the exact same prices, let me know cause i dont see it.

Sony may very well match $499, but the Series S is not just a digital Series X; it has lower specs. Hence the $299 price. The digital PS5 is just a PS5 without a disc drive. They would have to take a big loss to match these prices. They may not want to.

$499/299 was a common prediction, given the specs of each console. It was never guaranteed, and some people guessed higher, but this outcome wasn't a shock to anyone paying attention.

Then both PS5 versions would only need to compete with Serie X and Serie S doesn't pose a real threat because by definition it's not as powerful as both PS5 and Serie X, so even if Sony were to make PS5 disc and no disc at 499 and 399, they'd still be well in competition.
About the prediction, looking around i see more or less the same about PS5, so again I don't see a logic reason to thing "Sony can't even compete"...they can, maybe they won't, maybe they will, but they surely can.

Sony doesn't have money to burn like Microsoft does. Microsoft is running their gaming division at a loss to fuck over Sony and get back market share.

The Series S is a threat because it plays next-gen games with the same graphics and performance, just not at 4K, which requires a lot of GPU power. For many people this drawback won't be a problem because they still have 1080p TVs. So the Series S will play a role in people's decision about what console to get. Many may forego God of War and Horizon to jump into next-gen for just $299.
