Granted they've been slipping from it in the last gen pretty fucking bad. But on the PS1/2/P and even 3 they had new first-party IPs coming out all the time including plenty of smaller titles.
Other companies made consoles for a specific crowd, Sony made a console for everyone.

This. The only 1st party games on the PS4 I really liked this generation were Horizon ZD and Death Stranding, the reason I have a PS4 is because it was the only console that had the genres I like: JRPGs and rhythm games.
I love Halo and I'd own an Xbox in a heartbeat, but they don't have the OTHER types of games I like.
