It laid down the groundwork for conventional game design and you can appreciate it for that. There are moments that still hold up and are genuinely great, you'll be thinking about it long after you finish it.
But it's certainly not all that it's hyped up to be, and later games improved on it to such a degree that it's almost obsolete.
Not a bad way to waste your time, but more to appreciate a relic/artefact of history than to appreciate it at its face value. That said, its face value is still pretty decent and if nothing else you won't be squirming in your seat wanting to do something else when you're playing it.
