I recently bought the FFX/X-2 bundle on the Switch. I'm playing X right now and finding it pretty enjoyable. However, I also watched a Youtube video essay a while ago where the guy says that FFVI to FFX is the "golden age of final fantasy" after which the series goes to shit. He says that X-2 is where it all starts going downhill--basically he says the story is shit as it has Yuna turn into a cheesy pop star. Is it true that Final Fantasies after 10 are shit? If so, what specifically is shitty about them?
Is it true that final fantasy went to shit after FF10?
Short answer, yes.
It is well known that all final fantasies are shit--not only those after X
>FFVI to FFX is the "golden age of final fantasy"
It's more like the golden era of VIDEO GAMES in general. Things really started going South as a whole after the 6th console gen / mid-00s.
>He says that X-2 is where it all starts going downhill
Nah, X-2 is fun, but it's also pure fan-service for X's fans. If you considered X a good enough whole-package, then you may wanna skip X-2 and other side material.
What comes to the rest of the series, not even the fanbase will ever come to a common agreement on what games are "good" and what are "shit". The whole saga is literally a "choose your poison" kind of soup, with different games appealing to different folks.
I for example can't really stand the job-system games, that being everything from V to XII, since they really water down the characterization of the cast members and generally tend to play more akin to a weird MMO game. On the flip side, I did adore the XIII trilogy, which tryhards really try to bash as hard as they can.
From the more recent titles, XV was this long-awaited "never ever" project, that clearly suffered of the constant postpones and re-visions throughout the years. It's a kind of game that's pretty fun to play when you're doing anything BUT the main-story quests, and the plot generally falls flat as well.
I also just recently got to play the criminally underrated Type0, thru' the HD port, and I can honestly say that it might be my very favorite FF game ever made. So far, it's been FF9 sitting on that throne.
Finally: WoFF is one of the best FF games.
>Finally: WoFF is one of the best FF games.
Is that a conventional RPG or an MMORPG? The title sounds like an MMO but after a quick glance at wikipedia it sounds like a single player story driven game.
Yes, as soon as Kitase retired FF turned to shit. He was the main reason the series was any good.
>Is that a conventional RPG or an MMORPG?
it's a pure oldschool-type JRPG, with some "Pokemon" like elements.
It's pure SP. And pure fan-service experience with self awareness.
Correction. It went to shit with 10.
How is X not shit?
Gutted the open world for checkpoints, awful voice acting and cutscenes, really REALLY terrible story, forgettable villains.
X was clearly the beginning of the end of the franchise.
Basically. FF11 was apparently pretty good but was an MMO over an RPG, FF12 was very love it or hate it, only people with absolutely shit taste liked the FF13 trilogy at all, FF14 is pretty good but held back by an absolutely snoreworthy first act and by being an MMO and FF15 a developmental trainwreck that will never be finished since they cancelled the DLC that was supposed to give it a satisfactory conclusion.
Well it didn't really have an antagonist... Seymour was kind of forgettable.
No. X was the last good one that stuck with the model that every FF game should be a unique setting.
>How is X not shit?
It has truly few shitty part once you dig into it.
>Gutted the open world for checkpoints,
FF was never ever "open world".
No, the world map itself was nothing more than a widened pipe connecting "towns" and "caves", that were pretty much check points.
>awful VA
yeah, the early English dub left a lot to be desired, especially compare to the OG Jap score, but it wasn't unbearable.
>really REALLY terrible story
Now you're just really trying too hard.
The plot and themes of the game are some of its undeniable strengths.
The entire idea of a pilgrimage supports the tale's fairly linear structure, and you really get intimate with the cast, witnessing their growth.
>forgettable villains
X is an unique game in a sense that it doesn't really have a "villain" per-se.
Some could say that the Seymor tries to play the role of some fake-Sephiroth, but he's more like a side character given more screen time.
Lady Yunalesca is a late game encounter and arguably one of the "big tweests" in the tale.
Then there's the Sin, which indeed evolves from a mere mindless beast to something totally different.
I thought FFX was one of the worst in the series.
>only people with absolutely shit taste liked the FF13 trilogy at all
Yeah yeah, I used to shit on XIII as well... until I actually played it myself.
What I found was an intriguing world, one of the best casts in the entire series, fun battle system, and killer visuals and OST.
The sequels ironed out tons of the flaws of the OG, and are easily some of the best games in the whole IP.
Okay, I didn't.
the antagonist of X was Yu Yevon. All the FF games have what I call a secret antagonist.
What do you think are the worst in the series?
II, V, VIII, XI, XII, XIV
X-2 definitely has problems, but I still enjoy it. I'd recommend at least checking it out since you already own it.
fans are pretty split on XII. I personally think it's worse than X, but I still enjoyed it enough to play through the base version once and TZA once. you might want to check out a Let's Play or something to decide if it looks good to you.
13 and 15 both have more haters than fans. they do still have fans though so you might want to look into them. I actually like 13. mainly because the battle system is unique and appeals to me a lot. I still think the game has many flaws though.
They should've kept Uematsu
Music was Final Fantasy saving grace
>FF was never ever "open world".
Really? You can't see the difference between FF7 and FF13 at all?
>X is an unique game
Oh shut the fuck up, you can say that about any piece of shit.
I think the combat was great, the grid system was great, the music was great, the cast was great, I also really loved Blitzball, but it's undeniably the start of FF's decline. FF13 borrow's X's DNA more than anything else.
2 is the only one there I consider worse than 10 personally.
the start of FF decline was square enix, not FF X.
the proof of that is FF11 and FF12, they screwed up everything in 5-6 years.
hes a retard pseud. FF was always open world not gta gen open world but as good as it got. Hence the appeal
>Open world
it wasnt open world at all in 7,8,9, it was just a bunch of meshes resemble continents and a lowpoly player. plus, you cant revist a a lot of locations and the world feels empty as fuck (FF9, FF8)
Not even gonna reply to that.
lol yes it was the world map was open world. Your concept of open world came later when graphics and hardware improved.
The only reason X seemed linear was hardware limitations.
Last FF game I enjoyed was 12
But it did get consistently worse after 9
Now it’s an unrecognizable mess of a series, suppose this why they want to remake some classics before people realize they are out of ideas and skill
>Really?
Yes. Stop raping terminology.
>You can't see the difference between 7 and 13
I can, but none of the previous games still were open world, and did proceed in a very linear fashion.
>Oh shut the fuck up
Don't get so mad. Jesus.
>it's undeniably the start of FF's decline
On the contrary.
>FF13 borrow's X's DNA more than anything else.
Only on a very superficial level, and I really don't see that as a bad point.
Wrong
FF went to shit after the Enix merger. X-2 was the last game fully developed by Square.
FF I to FF V is the golden age of final fantasy before it went to shit, idiot
fucking kys you revisionist pseud.
>FF I to FF VII is the golden age of final fantasy before it went to shit, idiot
fixed
FF13 and onward are the FFs that nobody really ever brings up positively.
I've heard this so many fucking times and it's complete bullshit.
How the fuck was FFX the start of FF's decline if it was a good game? Just because bad games tried to ape it doesn't make FFX responsible for those games being bad, it means that FFX was good and they were bad. Clearly the formula FFX laid out can work, because FFX made it work.
Enix is a nothing entity, its just DQ IP being under the same corp entity, it was sakaguchi implosion (the reason for the merger) that sent everything into chaos
Well, XIV is pretty highly regarded... after they fixed it.
VI is terrible and VII is almost as bad
FF13 is probably the worst of them all, they just said fuck it and went with that soulless classical jrpg combat system and that’s the model that stuck. Even the FF7R is like this too, it’s just sad.
Honestly dont know whos trolling who. Im just gonna 360 out of here
Please go back to RetardEra, or at least come up with arguments.
>soulless classical jrpg combat system
There's truly a few things with MORE soul than the ATB, and FF7-demake is nothing alike.
it wasnt open world, cock sucker.
it was just an illusion, you must take your meds delusional nigger lover.
.
1-12 are good, you probably won't like 13 and 14, 15 is alright (but its not on the level of the previous entries)
People say they're shit because they don't follow the same formula and it required an IQ above 80 to not react with "game different game bad".
The worst FF games are at worst mediocre, even XIII and XV. Don't let spergs that can't comprehend a game being anything other than 0/10 or 10/10 dictate what you play.
>How the fuck was FFX the start of FF's decline if it was a good game?
Not that guy, but the same way the edge of a cliff is the start of a decline.
>Is it true that final fantasy went to shit after FF10?
in a sense, yes.
FFXI is a great MMO but the FF community seems to have too many poor people or something because they bitch about the amazing FF7 Remake and when Versus got announced they lost their shit because it wasn't on the poor box 360.
12 was shit because of all the crap that happened to it. It was unfinished cause the director left mid production. They couldn't story, they couldn't classes, they couldn't anything.
13 was utter garbage because they made it a multi-platform game mid-development and they couldn't even get it to run on the Xbox 360.
14 started of as uttershit gameplay and mechanics wise because it was only there as the graphically appealing MMO final fanasy. They kicked the dumbass director that thought it was a good idea out and replaced that person with someone that wasn't only competent but had to work day in and day out to fix the mess.
Final Fantasy Type-0 goes unnoticed despite it being literally the first Final Fantasy after 4 utter shit shows.
FFXV ended up as a shit show because the person that replaced Nomura had an axe to grind and wanted to make it his Final Fantasy and failed and had to release it as intended then add his crappy take on it.
There's other Final Fantasy garbage that get released like the mobile/steam crap but no one cares about them same as how no one gives a flying fuck about dissidia. So no point in bringing them up.
After all that stupid and 1 final fantasy game no one wants to acknowledge FF7R get released and the so called fans lose their shit because it's not a literal 1:1 of the original in some obscured upgraded 3D visual world. Who knows what those people want but probably all the stupid broke them too.
>12 , It was unfinished cause the director left mid production. They couldn't story, they couldn't classes, they couldn't anything.
source nigger?
