Sony was smart enough to enter an industry where incompetence is so prevalent it boggles your mind. Their whole strategy for as long as they've been in the business has been "wait for the other guy to do something stupid". You know what? It worked.

Played your DVDs, music, and games all for ridiculously cheap when format wars existed. Nintendo was making their core audience mad with "kiddy games" and 3rd parties hated mini-discs, Xbox was a newcomer, and SEGA died from literal incompetence. >PS3 failed out of the gate because they were too ambitious, "FIVE HUNDRED NINTEY NINE US DOLLARS", and ridiculous ads and marketing (like the crying baby). They got their footing after the price cut and Kevin Butler ads, but they lost a LOT of good will. >PS4 destroyed Xbox One because MS shot themselves in the foot, face, and dick all at the same time when revealing the Xbone at E3. PS4 just said "Hey! We're not them! :D". They also released a 12 second ad showing that you share used games like normal people. There are people who bought PS4s in literal protest to Xbox One. They killed Xbone instantly based primarily on Xbox screwing themselves over.
Xbox looks good now, but screencap this. Microsoft WILL find a way to fuck up. When they do, Sony will scoop up the good will and the marketshare. Just wait.

the switch is already dominating gen 9. the ps5 is gonna be 600 dollars, and this time around it wont have a fraction of the versatility (the full backwards compatibility, the blu-ray player no other system had) or game library to justify it.

I also agree, the incompetence of the video game industry is baffling. Zig Forums used to predict that there wouldn't be a PS4 because Sony was on the verge of bankruptcy, but I disagreed for that reason. If Sony had any hope to survive, their best shot was to bet on the video game industry, because they'd have no chance against Apple and Samsung. Their best chance was to put all their resources into a PS4, and get it out the door no matter what, because the video game industry is the only industry incompetent enough to let Sony win.

sonyCHAD here. so far the promises that microsoft made are REALLY GOOD. And making a low cost next gen console was a clever move. Is true that sony have more interesting titles so far but microsoft have really good new studios like Ninja theory, obsidias, Remedy, etc. and the gamepass is a very good deal. i think this will be a xbox 360 situation in which the ps3 will have a harder time defeating microsoft, or hell maybe microsoft will win, who knows. the more of the story is that you’re ok as long as you don’t defend nintendo.

If it's very expensive, more people may hold out and wait with buying, giving Xbox a chance to prove itself. PS5 will probably still win by a lot, no matter how poorly they do things, but they may lose a lot. But actually, the Xbox One did better than I thought, I thought it couldn't be at more than maybe 20-30 million. So there's less to gain than I thought, they may still steal 10-20 million from PS5 if Sony does a terrible job though.
