It's not cheaper than generic insulin, you can go to walmart and get generic stuff for super cheap. But as I understand it (my pancreas works, for now...) the generic stuff makes you feel a bit bleh, whereas the expensive stuff contains various other things to stabilise the effect. The company that came up with this precise design has to recoup the R&D costs, so they get to patent it and charge whatever they think they can get away with. However the pricing is arbitrary, they will adjust pricing to make up for losses in other areas of research that haven't panned out. Insurance companies amortise these costs across all the medications they have to pay for for all their clients, but you as an end user of one specific thing are going to get hit in the face with it.

Well, if I develop Type 2 and go see my "free" doctor in my glorious socialist europistan I'm pretty certain I'm getting off brand NoName I-Can't-Believe-Its-Not-Insulin with no option to upgrade. I would say Americans on insurance policies get better quality stuff more often than I do. However that's not to say that I would like the system whereby if I lost my job I get to pay $3000 for a checkup, just making an observation.
