It had that mobile game a year or two ago, got new kazenban releases, and occasional merch, and I've seen it get high placings in Japanese twitter polls. It's not TOTALLY dead, I'd say it could make a comeback if Raiku really pursued it

I haven't even really watched the anime to be honest. I only recognize it because I saw an episode or two on TV when I was a kid and thought the dolls were kinda creepy.
I know almost nothing about this series. I just always assumed it was another Shonen Jump anime like Yu Yu Hakusho or Hunter x Hunter.

i wish one of this anime/manga crossover games would add a really stupid western character like superman or fucking popeye just for the comical contrast
unironically wish shit like injustice or MK did the same, throw fucking Guts into MK11 just for the bizarreness of it

I mean, it IS a formuliac battle shonen, but it's not by jump, and it's one of the best.

It's formulaic, but it's sticking to that formula because the author obviously has fun with it, rather then trying to tick checkmarks for the sake of reaching a wide audience. There's a real sense of earnestness and ingenuity to the stuff it does that's fun. A part of this is that it has a really nice contrast (and it can be severe contrast, there's one point where you go from a song about breasts to a child trying to commit suicide due to abusive parents back to back) between typical corny power of friendship stuff, and legitmately good comedy, against dark emotional gut punches, witph the latter making the former feel genuinine and not tropey and the former making the latter hit harder

It's also got a really well designed power system (each character is really a pair, a human who reads a spellbook and a demon who uses the spells when they are cast, so fights require both of them as active particpants, with each demon having a specific set of spells that do specific things which are used tactically, plus lower tier spells use less heartpower so even as characters get better spells weaker ones still have utility for pacing themselves in fights; when a book is burned that demon goes back to the demon world), and unlike a lot of other battle shonen it also never devolves into being a bloated, poorly paced and powerscaled mess like virtually every other series does, and pretty much only ever gets better the further in you get, which is good because admittedly the first few volumes are sort of just okay
