Be honest, have you beaten the classic without save states and/or rewind?

this game is actually very easy even with no warps. i am surprised that most people here aren't even capable of that.

It would feel wrong to complete it any other way than the way it was meant to be played.

Did that back in '88.

Am I allowed to use continues? Or do I have to start over at 1-1 when I game over?

Of course I have. It's not even a hard game.

Yes because I've completed it on real hardware.

Of course, in a NES. Are you assuming we are all zoomers?

The only difficult aspect of SMB1 were Hammer Bros and even then iirc all of them have a mushroom near by so you can just cheese them.

yeah

Did this when I was in junior highschool.

Back then it wasn't like today where you have dozens of games to switch to. Most of us only got games for birthdays and Xmas. Maybe a couple more in the summer by cutting lawns for cash in the neighborhood. In otherwords, kids didn't have walls of games to choose from. Most kids had 20 or less games for this system. Which meant, you played them over and over and over as you had nothing else to play. You got very good at them. The only cheat codes back then were published in magazines (EGM, Game Pro). There was no internet to look stuff up on. Most kids beat this game. I knew a kid who could beat 1-1 with his eyes closed just by knowing when to jump by the musical score of the first level.

How many hours do you estimate you’ve played? NES or the SNES version?

NES or SNES for best first experience? SNES is pretty.

You have to restart from 1-1 since that’s the main way to play.

Doesn't the game give you 3 continues?

I wasn't interested enough in Mario 1 or 3 to go through the challenge because I never liked Peach. I 1cc cleared Mario 2 (US) which is objectively much harder.

Also this platformer was more worth my childhood time than Mario 1 & 3.

>How many hours do you estimate you’ve played?
I have spent 110 hours on my 3DS, it's pretty fun to just start and complete in 15min-40min
>NES or the SNES version?
NES. They fucked some things in the snes version that made it pretty weird to play, like how mario reacts when he hits a block when he is in big form

8-3 is almost all Hammer Brothers and most of them aren't on ledges you can bop from below. It can be both the easiest or hardest stage in that world due to how lucky you are clearing their hammers when jumping over them. There's only one power-up in the stage too if I remember right (and it's the only one you get till the end of the game as 8-4 is completely devoid of power-ups).

Unlimited continues but it's via cheat code (hold down the A button when pressing start on the title screen).

>SMB2 hard

Why are you larping?

Several ti es but with warps.
i probably beat every single level lf it though.

Meanwhile zoomers spend their days crying about how they have hundreds of games but no motivation to play any of them, so they just keep arguing over stupid made up angry bullshit and playing the same competitive online game over and over.

Weirdly I find myself missing the days when I didn't have access to thousands of games while paying very little. It made new stuff feel exciting rather than just part of an incessantly growing featureless blob of "stuff I could play".

Back in the old days I'll get a new game and play it for a long time. Now I get a new game and often times I'll just put it on the shelf as part of my gigantic backlog. I never even HAD a backlog until the PS2 era.

Yes. Both on original hardware and on Deluxe.
The game isn't all that challenging until World 8

No. I got bored with it.

This, even as I kid I didn't play platformers if the story was shit. I liked Castlevania, most Mega Man, loved the hell out of Bionic Commando, but Mario 1 always struck me as overrated. Mario 3 was pretty good though.

Yeah. I can't penetrate the Lost Levels though. Maybe someday.

>caring about story in NES platformers

Nice bait.

Of course. Grew up playing this shit. I'll admit I only ever beat it using warps, but I was a kid.

no I always fuckin hated how slippery mario was
castlevania, metroid, ninja gaiden, bionic commando, kirby, those were my favorites

>Goofy plumber from Brooklyn saves a fairytale princess from Turtle King
Versus
>Die Hard but in Dracula's Castle wherein Dracula is essentially Satan
C'mon

overdoing it a bit there. Too much bait and the fish leave.

Mario has come a long way and improved a lot but I care about Mario 1 just as much as Capcom cares about Mega Man 1.

Not him but maybe scenario is a better word than story. I similarly always thought Mario was goofy kiddy shit and I didn't enjoy playing it either.

First Mario was the most barebones game on the entire platform. I never got why people latched onto it so much.

Nope. Fuck that game. The jump is just so weird that I can't not suck at the game. I can tear up some other platformers but I could never get the hang of that jumping in that game.

Inb4 git gud. I'm just being real over here.
