In 1776, the Patriots (Americans) and the Redcoats (English) spoke with accents that were much closer to the contemporary American accent than to the Queen’s English.

Because for whatever reason we've all decided, collectively, that both historical and foreign = British. Even being aware of that, it's hard to shake that assumption subconsciously; when I was in college, I watched The Last Temptation of Christ back-to-back with Monty Python's Life of Brian, and the latter, ironically, seemed like a more accurate period piece because everyone was British and I couldn't take Harvey Keitel's thick New York accent seriously.

With the exception of the first one, where everyone is American, and both Syndicate and Black Flag, where everyone sounds British because they are British, the games tend to mostly play out with either the accent or a close enough representation of the accent of the historical setting. Ezio and everyone in Venice/Rome/etc sounded Italian-ish; Kassandra and everyone in Greece sounded Med, etc.
