Good physics, tight controls and high player agency while still being a simple game that anyone can play and have fun with.

It just feels great to move around. Combos are freeform and in one instance you could be doing something and its never gonna happen again, not because of your lack of skills but because things went a specific way and you were able to react and make something out of it.

It's just really solid all around. Every other entry in the series is seriously lacking in one way or another, to an extent that hurts the experience. Melee doesn't leave you itching for something to be better.

Literally a nitpick. The character select screen was always going to be a utility-UI, regardless of the graphics used to spruce it up, and even if it was nice, the amount of time spent on it was immaterial compared to the meat of the game itself on stages and game modes.
