Just finished this as my first Donkey Kong game and let me just say wow. I was shocked at how meaty this shit is. I genuinely got some challenge playing this I'd honestly unironically say it's harder than dark souls.
I always thought Donkey Kong games were baby mario shit with a monkey but I was wrong. DK is a fucking beast it's also super refreshing to play a Funkey Kong right after all that and whoop the games ass. I have a new found respet not only for Donkey Kong but for nintendo as a whole.
Despite marketing Dark souls is not that hard most of the time.

DKC2 is a harder game but also substantially shorter so you can still breeze through it in an afternoon in spite of all the deaths as long as you're not doing Lost World stuff.
I think Tropical Freeze's difficulty stands out for more people because its levels are fucking massive, death tends to set you back a lot further.

Tropical Freeze is a very impressive game and my favorite platformer in the past decade but 2 barely edges it out for me because it doesn't have any low points, it's tight the whole way through. When TF is brilliant there's nothing else like it but it's got walls like World 4 that just kill my motivation to keep playing.
Returns is solid. It feels like a Donkey Kong game trying to do the Mario thing.

I'm really hoping they were already working on it when they had Metroid dropped on their plate, I mean that was years after they finished tropical freeze. Also Miyamoto said that they're ready to work on more than one title at once years ago.

Now that you've beat that go play the first two Donkey Kong Country games, they can be absolute bastards at times but they're incredibly well designed.
