Why is it SO much better than its sequels?
Superstar Saga
same thing with Paper Mario
who knows, sometimes the first time is the charm
Ok, I will bite. What did you not like about BiS?
No giant battles
the platforming inside bowsers belly
I never could get into Superstar Saga and only finally managed to slog through it thanks to the shitty 3DS port
It's objectively worse than BiS and I feel like PiT has more soul
Still have to play Dream Team, but I doubt that one will be worse than saga
Shitty minigames.
unskippable hand holding for way too long in the beginning
Besides the annoyingly long tutorial that I wish they made some sort of update to shorten it. I thought dream team was in par with the first game. It had so many memorable stuff that by the end of it I ended up loving it
what the fuck
this wasn't the box art
i managed to trade the kart to some kid for a justice league and spider man game so i have actually never seen the box
The sequels are both rehashes but also ridden with gimmicks and novelty shit just for the sake of it that weights them down. Superstar Saga was the first so it just could push the classic formula from the beginning to end without watering it down even once with novelty crap.
It also wasn't some adventure or journey. Mario and Luigi just went for a trip and traveled around the area while doing some errands on the way.At least it felt that way. The later games always shoved in a more ambitious purpose for their travels which Mario and Luigi aimed at. In the first game it felt like Mario and Luigi didn't give much of a fuck about the main plot and just did their thing.
It's just too long
BIS was 20 hours and Dream Team was 30. The last stretch is padded to hell.
Everything inside Bowser
The games good but really carried by the charm of playing as Bowser. Superstar Saga has its low points, the game kind of sucks between Little Fungitown and Jokes End, but Id still call it a tighter game.
Tbh i loved everysingle one of Mario & Luigi's games, but yeah specially superstar saga, maybe because of the soul on the sprites and being the first...
SuperStar Saga > BiS >> Dream Team >> PiT
Paper Jam not included because its devoid of soul
Why is every RPG Mario game since the SNES not good?
>I feel like PiT has more soul
Really baffled by all the PiT praising lately. The game is mediocre as fuck and probably the most soulless entry in the series (haven't played Paper Jam).
Yeah the last part was a bit padded but it didn't bother me as much
Because chortles
>haven't played Paper Jam
You're not missing much. Which is a shame because I'm sure they could have made something they wanted if they weren't in some strict schedule that people talked about. Is a shame and now they're gone
Partners in Time was my favorite, both for gameplay and the time traveling alien invasion plot. As well as finally razing the Mushroom Kingdom down. Seriously, holy fuck, that place is invaded every game, their princess kidnapped on a weekly basis, their line of defense is 2 plumbers, it’s a miracle it took this long for it to suffer consequences from an invasion.
i started playing partners and time yesterday after i remembered what a good time i had with superstar saga, but it's this as well. i don't like the whole top screen being a minimap either. it only takes the fun out of exploration. The first two hours seems to be an extended tutorial, wheras Superstar Saga gave you minigames and puzzles to solve right away, you more learned as you played, and sometimes you were genuinely lost, you didn't know what to do or where to go after you fell out of the sky. No one was giving you instructions. It really felt like Mario to me, and Mario doesn't have long exposition and he doesn't follow instructions from anyone. I didn't even question the change in genre back then.
Well, I haven't played most of them, but I would say Superstar Saga was genuinely good. I loved the artwork and animation. Having all the unique levels and different methods to explore the world was fun too.
All the weird fetish stuff.
I don't get it either. The game is insanely weak from every perspective and a strict downgrade from SS in every way.
>Overworld exploration from SS is gone, Toadsworth just teleports you to each dungeon area
>The babies added no tangible advancement in gameplay and gave you a very small "extra life" if the actual Bros died at best and boring exploration segments vs 10hp monsters at worst
>Bros Moves replaced with consumable finite items which you could run out of and had to buy more instead of just buying syrups for a bunch of attacks you could pick and choose like in SS or every game thereafter
>Bosses are massive HP sponges and take forever to kill without adding much actual difficulty or in-depth gameplay
>Shroobs can't talk, which eliminates entirely 1/2 of the appeal of Mario RPG games which is the banter of enemies like Bowser or Popple/Fawful or even Cackletta
>Stuffwell starting the trend of shitty companions like Starlow and Dreambert who we can't get rid of now
>Bowser relegated to a Bowser Jr joke
>Charming side characters like Popple replaced with the shitty Koopa photographer
I genuinely can't remember a single piece of dialog from this game other than that spirit door telling Luigi he's not pure of heart. Other than Joke's End, there are no weak parts of SS and the game is much more fun to play along with having a ton of fun easter eggs like the coffee and passports.
Bowser's Inside Story is very good and Dream Team is mediocre, but PiT is aggressive bad in a lot of ways.
It's the only one with a proper overworld, I think.
BIS and DT kind of try but they are not even nearly as fun to explore as SSS.
How's the SS remake? I heard it's too easy.
It’s not though. It’s a fantastic game, don’t get me wrong, but most of the Mario and Luigi games are. PiT slipped up here and there and PJ really only has some great bosses going for it but BIS and DT are fantastic all around, they just have some pacing issues.
Strictly worse. It removes a lot of the charming designs, animations, etc. and doesn't have much to add for it. The additional mode is kind of okay but not exceptionally deep and has almost nothing to do with the main game gameplay-wise. The real trick here is this accurately described both of the M&L remakes.
>>Bowser relegated to a Bowser Jr joke
Those two would've made a really neat recurring boss fight, with them learning new combinations attacks as the game went on.
Doesn't add enough in response for removing a lot of the charm of the original game, the weird enemy designs, etc. It's just SS in Dream Team / Paper Jam's streamlined engine. Considering you can emulate SS on a toaster there's no reason to play it unless you really want to try out the shallow Bowser Jr tactics game.
>I heard it's too easy
The original game is really easy too if you just keep spamming Bros. attacks,
What the hell, what's this fake ugly boxart
Because it was new and capitalized on that. The sequels were phone-ins
