Yes. I once thought the AFPS genre could be rescued but you have to be honest, pure AFPS are a relic of the past. I had fun with Warsow, Toxxic and Quake Live but it only attracts people who played AFPS 20 years ago. I wouldn't say that AFPS are dead but rather pure AFPS. Games like Fortnite, Overwatch or Team Fortress 2 are AFPS at it's core, but attract a new crowd by adding new mechanics or dumbing down classic AFPS mechanics.

Of course he was right. Battle Royale has replaced the arena shooter. Arena shooters can be fun but they haven't brought in the big money in ages and they don't have the autisticly dedicated fanbase of simulation games, which are also small but more invested.

Arena shooters suffer the same issue as the fighting game genre. If you don't git gud you get fucking rolled. This is a huge issue with small, insular gaming communities: there is such a shortage of new blood that none of them are able to play regularly at their skill level and instead get stomped by veterans, driving them away.
This is of course a downward spiral as the games are effectively unable to gather any new members to create a strata of low skill that is welcoming to new members and therefore slowly die.

Only due to circumstance. The God play for Diabotical would have been too convince Epic to let them turn it into Fortnite Arena, kept the gameplay exactly the same but allowed you to use Fortnite skins and earn battle pass credit by playing out instead of Fortnite.
AFPS would have shot up to the top and stayed there.

Diabotical is pretty darn good, but i still prefer the other game.

Yeah the genre is never going to recover. I loved quake champions and played a ton of it but it's unusable now. Diabotical is going to be the same story as all the rest. It's sad but whatever there's nothing I can do. I'm reasonably happy to play dota instead.

So basically the way I'm reading this, if you want to make a serious Arena FPS the best thing to do is make whatever the fuck you want and not worry about "muh quake 3" or "muh Unreal Tournament"?

Maps were meh for the most part, multiplayer modes are boring, only really good mode is 1v1. Then theres the other fundamental problem that made me quit playing 2 days in. The audiovisual style is underwhelming. Theres no visceral satisfaction blowing up a cartoon robot ball. The guns dont sound like anything, neither do the deaths. If they insist on there not being any gore, then at least the robot balls should send gears and metal parts flying all across the room on death, instead of just disappearing behind a short 2D animation sprite of a bursting flame.

I'd be happy if they just spiced up the gunfeel. Make it chunkier, meatier more like it has material. Neither sounds nor animations give a sense of physicality. They feel like nerfguns.

Yet BRs are the currently most popular genre, and the same goes for them. In fact of you die once, you're out, you wasted the whole 30 minute match, BRs are even less forgiving than arena shooters.

It's far more of a traditional arena shooter than many other games people call arena shooters.

But BR has the atractiveness of playing lottery. You pull the arm to see where and what drops you get to fight with. You have the gambling aspect, you have the day'z aspect, you have the relatively medium game length aspect without it being a repetition game, like a an average multiplayer combat game is and you have the little skill requirements aspect. Its a perfect blend of no time investment needed.
