I really wish they would've gone with the unused shit in the files. Not that this fight isn't already emotionally fucked up and disturbing, but judging from the cut content it looks like this fight was meant to be WAAAAAY more fucked up

I thought that the backgrounds were either something for Lucas to remember Claus by, or that it was meant to be Giygas messing with Lucas' grief and turning into Claus.

You mean the nightmare Claus stuff? I dont think that would have been part of the final fight, feels like it would have been a nightmare that Lucas would have had trying to cope with Claus's disappearance/death.

No by that point giygas didn't exist. The way that ness and the gang defeated him in mother 2 leaves him no possible way to return. I think the purpose was to show what lucas' emotional and mental state, showing what he's seeing when he looks at the masked man.

If you watch the one video ( the one everyone knows) It's pretty accurate to what it would've looked like in the end. The only other way that those backgrounds could have been used in my thinking is if you had to fight the masked man in stages as you got closer and closer to the final needle, but they most likely decided to just cram it all into one fight. I think when they made the fight they felt like they were going a bit too far, the finished boss is still really emotionally charged even without the extremely disturbing and distorted backgrounds. I think Itoi wanted more of a sadness vs horror vibe

I think porky turned evil with a little more than just giygas influence. His roots with happy happyism and his dealings with monotolli probably corrupted him in addition to giygas' apple of enlightenment

Funny how Mother deals with love between parents and children... and the final villain is someone who is the result of lack thereof.

I think thats a pretty accurate visual representation, it doesn't explain the unused enemy angel sprites but i'd assume that's also just a hallucination from lucas' eyes.

I think it was a combo of being too disturbing and also it's kind of like "I get it" the text and what's going on in the story are enough, the visuals kind of detract from the empathy you are supposed to feel in this scene

I think a better reasoning would be that the Masked Man ends up pulling the final needle, completely corrupting Claus with the dragons power, and essentially ending the world/breaking reality (similar to what Giygas causes during his fight after the devils machine is broken) to where Lucas is completely alone, floating in this nightmarish void to fight a corrupted " dragon god" powered Claus in different stages.

I think that it was meant for Lucas thinking that Claus was dead.

I wish that nightmare Claus made it in the final game. We need a remake of this badly.

There are just randomizers and a sprite editors, and one that swaps Claus and Lucas's roles with actual altered dialogue. Everything else is just either a fanmade boss fight, or a dead fan game.

No user, the point of Mother 3 is showing you the result of a messed up kid like Porky having experienced what he has while also having nearly unlimited access to all the things he could ever want. The only other major actor/influencer in Porky's plans in Mother 3 is Fassad, who is genuinely a bad person.

This series went from cute and quirky fun with some dark undertones to melodrama told with a straight face and it's unironically hilarious. How the hell did people find any of this game moving? Especially when most of the protagonists stop talking after Chapter 5 and it just becomes a macguffin plot.

I'm blown away that people love this game. It's a huge step down from the first two.

Plus the fact that the story thought it would be a good idea to have Leder give an entire exposition dump as to what the fuck's actually happening in the same chapter where the game ends. Fucking dumpster fire.

Mother 3's (arguably) central tragedy of the masked man's identity was pretty obvious from the get go, which weakened the impact of the big reveal.
And what I loved about Earthbound was how it very much was set in our world, despite the fantastical elements, whereas mother 3 has this falseness to it. And the lack of anything disturbing, instead going for sad factor, was a step down.
Still a good game, but I don't understand how people can prefer it to Earthbound.
