People naturally seek groups to belong to. As the importance of family has declined and you're not allowed to be proud of your culture either, grouping yourself by the entertainment you consume is the next best thing, and worshipping the creator of said entertainment becomes natural.

There is plenty of culture and tradition in the West (but yes, religion has largely been eroded). And consumerism flourishes even in countries where religion is still strong. It doesn't matter. It seems consumerism is stronger than everything because it's more convenient than everything else.
