Working my way through 3D Sonic, SOUL Adventure is just as magical as I remember. SA2 is embarrassing, but still kinda charming. That fucking mocap work is hilarious.

I miss being excited for new Sonic games. Apart from Mania, it's been about 15 years. I don't even care that it's kiddyshit; it's just depressing seeing something so formative in my childhood/adolescence become a hollow, lifeless brand which secretes uninspired grey sludge every once in a while

I think all along Sonic was a lifeless brand, at least since 2001-ish. We just didn't notice because we were young. It's depressing because Sonic has the potential to be one of the greatest gaming franchises ever, there's so much imagination and wonder in the series. The people in charge just don't care, and the most depressing thing is that we may never get developers in charge who truly understand it.

In hindsight, 00s Sonic was a gift. There were great games here and there, and even the shit or mediocre games were, dare I say, soulful and edifying.
