Why does turn-based combat still exist? It was only created because of technical limitations, no one actually enjoys it.
Why does turn-based combat still exist? It was only created because of technical limitations, no one actually enjoys it
>wccftech
it was created to give control over multiple characters
Some people like to think and enjoy battles.
I like to have dozens of skills and spells at my disposal and if I don't have time to carefully select what I'm playing, I will end up spamming the same thing over and over and that isn't fun.
Have you played Kingdom Hearts? Its action based and requires a lot of intense thoughts and decision making skills on even normal difficulty
in the modern age turn based is great because it allows you to shrink the workload for nearly every other aspect of gameplay
>can reuse assets, body models don't need complex IK since you are just watching animations
great from a developer standpoint that is, I think turn based is an absolute slog otherwise
I enjoy it.
That's not true at all though
Idk I was able to beat the games just mashing attack over and over
>if it's boring it means i have to think
Tell me OP, has a doctor ever noticed that you struggle with empathy?
So you haven't played it
That's a lie
>broadsword
Because group based combat is a thing. Because it allows for more tactical depth. Because it is awesome
>intense thoughts and decision making skills on even normal difficulty
dude its a game for kids
Way better than overrated shit like souls-like combat.
Fucking pleb.
FFX is a good mini-strategic JRPG imo. The removal of ATB really helped.
It's still fun. That's mainly why, but you are correct, it felt very outdated even 20 years ago.
I think the best compromise is what Mass Effect did and have a pause feature to strategize in combat. It combined the best of both worlds without compromising and looking ridiculous.
Hahaha kingdon hearts requires zero thought.
Kingdom hearts 1 is all magic spam, KH2 is all reflect wisdom spam, KH2FM is just reactions muscle memory on like four fights. KH3 is this but even worse.
Pattern recognition does not make an action game good.
>What mass effect did
>Pause button
That's not true, there were action rpgs back then too, it was created to have a strategic combat system.
Because Japs are uncreative bug people.
Why do people keep trying to take away our turn based games?
It's not even a big scene anymore. Fuck off and play a difference game.
I have only enjoyed turn-based combat in south park, but I'm sure I'd still enjoy the game if it had real time combat.
The answer lies in your question, OP. Because turn-based is based.
all games are for kids retard, you're not more mature for the toys you use
Kids struggle to beat Kingdom hearts
you can just aeon spam your way out of every situation, nice strategy
Wrong
Spamming magic in KH1 is impossible unless you cheat to add infinite ethers since you get like 3 casts in the beginning. Reflect wisdom spam works a bit, and there are other tactics that work which makes it a thinking mans game, KH3 is a mistake
What is reflect wisdom? I'm playing KH2 right now and I'm really struggling, all I do is mash X and cure from time to time.
Lol this, we're not bothering anyone, if you don't like it just go to another game, there are tons of people that like it, you're acting like fucking SJWs.
I think pause-based systems actually suck ass. They can't have the number of options that a purely turn-based system has and at the same time they can't build the combat and challenge of the game on the fact that it would require real-time reactions from the player, it's the fucking worst of both worlds. Action interrupted by pausing but without the proper depth of a good turn-based title or the good flow of combat of a proper real-time title.
I really dont get it. There's more ARPGs coming out than ever, FF will probably never go back to turn-based, yet there's still people that want everything to be action.
Turn based combat like your pic indeed is worthless shit, but there are still games that do turn based combat well. Obviously mostly strategies like heroes of might and magic, age of wonders, king's bounty, battle brothers, but I also found divinity original sin games to have a very fun combat, and even darkest dungeon works despite its simplicity, though perhaps largely because of its style and art direction, rather than mechanics themselves.
All games are.
because they are shit, get better taste faggot and stop eating up trash
The biggest problem with turn based games is they often aren't balanced, most of them are spam attack for random encounters and then blow your mp pools on the boss. They made recovery items cheap as fuck to buy in games so healing in between battles is simple. Last game I played with challenging random battles was Lost Odyssey, and that game had a low random encounter rate so it felt like each battle mattered and a built in mechanic to prevent grinding so you're more or less forced to fight the bosses the way the devs intended.
DQXi was fun, but outside a couple segments its just attack spam until bosses
I'm an action game guy myself but I can see the appeal in turn-based. It completely separates out the strategy/decision-making and your physical skill with a pad, which makes it ideal if you're shit drunk, or literally physically retarded/missing limbs, or eating while playing, or a whole number of other things.
When it's turn-based, /you/ get to dictate the pace of the battle rather than having it decided for you, which isn't my cup of tea and it wouldn't work for everything but it has its place.
Turn Based isn't the problem. The problem is JRPG is a braindead genre that's made for the lowest common denominator.
You can have incredibly fun, deep and complex boss battles in turn based combat. You can have interesting buffs/debuffs/attacks in turn based. You can have deep and rewarding itemization.
The problem is devs choose to go for the easiest possible route, meaning everything is braindead easy and shallow in an attempt to appease weebs, a notoriously low IQ group. This is why 99.99% of Turn Based JRPGs are dogshit.
As someone who has played the series, that is bullshit.
As long as it's not boring shit like FFXV's Hold O to win garbage, I am fine with turn based or real time
pls
Wisdom form spam reflect on boss, pretty much incredibly safe defensive frames and HUGE chunk/nuke potential. Can take ass long on certain magic immune/resistant bosses but still super effective and legit way to play.
>Spamming magic in KH1 is impossible
Literally you just run up melee combo to get MP back then rinse and repeat. Not difficult at all, also KH2's variety makes it fun it doesn't make it thought provoking since everything is genuinely pretty balanced.
this
Oh, I thought I could use it in every battle, the fucking pirates of the caribbean level piss me off so much since you can't attack them in the dark and they do a ton of damage
Its fun though, and a nice way to chase a more action oriented game. It's like the difference between ice cream and steak
It can still be used in trash pulls user, for the pirates world hit them with fire or thunder or ice ccs them for awhile, doubly so if they stand in the moon.
Yeah, who needs chess or poker? Fuck taking turns since it's obviously about a technical limitation and not a legitimate method of making gameplay work.
It SUPRISES ME THAT ONLY A FEW RPG HAS TIME BUTTONED INPUT AND DODGING MECHANIC! WHY IS LIFE LIKE THIS?
>no one actually enjoys it.
Tell that to the millions of people who bought Divinity Original Sin games
Yes because spamming one or two attacks and then watching the same boring animations is the same as the level of strategy of chess
Where do you put Battle Network? Reloading chips always felt turn-based to me while the combat was action.
Tactical RPGs are not the same as your typical turn-based "mash Attack to win" RPGs.
Imagine being filtered by turn-based combat
I challenge you to stream doing that for the entirity of DQ11
Bro, the game is as simplistic as it gets.
>Divinity Original Sin games
see, but those actually work well, there's a decent amount of strategizing, a wide variety of abilities, placement is important etc
it's completely unlike the jrpg style of stand in place and spam attack
>Where do you put Battle Network? Reloading chips always felt turn-based to me while the combat was action.
I would put it in the same vein as stuff like FF7R
I thought this was pretty good
High level chess isn't that complicated retard. It only looks deep because you know nothing about it, but there's a reason people can see through the entire game from the first move. I also like how you ignored poker.
but Want something simpler? Let's see how well baseball works when everyone on the field has a bat then hmm? Gotta play all at the same time or it's not interesting, right?
Also, RPGs are primarily about stat focus.
jrpgs are visual novel tier of gameplay difficulty. You can beat the game just by grinding and button mashing. No real skill involved.
>DQXi was fun, but outside a couple segments its just attack spam until bosses
You should have played with tougher encounters and less exp. If you didn't play on draconian quest, your opinion on the game's difficulty means nothing.
Most turn based games have more types of attacks than chess does?
Also they never claimed anything about the "level of strategy", are you autistic? Why strawman them?
