I don't understand why they added the religion storyline, secession from the US, and civil war to the game when it amounted to nothing in the end. You didn't need a damn cult to explain segregation; it was happening naturally in the US at the point, and the forgiveness thing can be done without a hint of religion. It's all fluff for cool but ultimately substanceless setpieces (like Comstock appearing to taunt you while his followers are genuflecting or the second half of the game). It feels like Levine trying to jack off about how deep his game's world is when it's just dumb.

Here's a much more logical take on the story

>columbia is a floating 24/7 world fair presentation that's officially a part of the US, showing america's greatness to the world
>it's gone radio silent for a month
>us government sends one of their guys, booker dewitt, to investigate why
>columbia figures out booker is from the gov and goes apeshit
>it's discovered that columbia's leadership is turning the population into an army of bloodthirsty mutants via not!plasmids/quantnum physics shenanigans and making columbia into a giant warship to overthrow the us government and install themselves as its leaders
>booker stumbled upon them as they were entering the final phases of their plan, hence why the city is gunning for him
>key to their plan is elizabeth
>plot twists are columbia was a front to research quantum physics and that columbia's long term goal is planning to dimension hop after gaining all of the resources of the US to take over everywhere
>your goal is to save elizabeth, kill the leadership (comstock, saltonstall) so the us gov can take control again, and if columbia is too far gone, destroy it

I really hate it when devs sell you on the idea of a game with screenshots and videos for years only to find out the final game is a lobotomized watered down version of what was promised. STALKER also is guilty of this but mostly for the dumbed down ALife AI.
