Spyro

I do love platformers, Mario 64 and the like, although was disappointed with Odyssey.
I've always been interested in Spyro, much more so than Crash Bandicoot, and was wondering if this is a good enough entry to start with? Or should I just emulate the PS1 entries, if they're any better?

Emulate PS1 Spyro 1.

The Spyro games are pretty fun, although Spyros movement is pretty basic, he is a far cry from Mario

Spyro is more of a fast paced collectathon than a platformer, aside from the infamous Tree Tops level the platforming is rather simple. It's a really fun one though, I like to load the game up for a quick 100% session every couple of weeks. Spyro 2 is good but starts locking some collectibles behind minigames. Some are really fun, others, not so much. Spyro 3 commits the same sin as Crash 3, it detracts from the core gameplay and focuses too much on gimmicky minigames. Unlike 2 where while there some lame minigames, there's not a single minigame in Spyro 3 that I look forward to. All of them are garbage, you're also forced to play as gimmicky characters.

I highly recommend Spyro 1 and 2, only play 3 if you're a completionist and expect a meh experience.

Emulation definitely, the remake is a lazy nostalgia cashgrab that completely visually misinterprets what made the originals stand out from contemporaries.

as much as I love the originals, I think you should go with the remake. The controls are snappier, higher framerate and you can move the camera with the analog stick.
The visual changes won't bother you if you have no nostalgia for it

Go with the Spyro remake but buy it digital. The physical copies only come with Spyro 1, this is regardless of console. Activision are assholes and it pissed me off I couldn't own a physical featuring all three games.

play spyro 1 and only spyro 1, through mednafen or beetle hw. the sequels got really dumb and aren't fantasy with wizards, castles, knights and dragons and shit like that, they try to be to "wacky" with technology and furry characters end up with shitty puzzles and level design

>The visual changes won't bother you if you're ignorant about how bad they are in comparison

These anons are blinded by nostalgia, Spyro 1 is completely garbage by modern standards and is painfully boring to play through, if you are going to play the trilogy and are a newcomer to the series then start with 2.

Why not. The insomniac trilogy is the peak of the series and obviously goes down from there. Can't go wrong

is left supposed to look bad? i don't get it

But why?

>Or should I just emulate the PS1 entries, if they're any better?
Objectively speaking, they're both great.
The remake completely subverted the artstyle, which is deplorable for the fans of the original, but this is no problem for someone who has never played either of them.
Chances are, if you start with the originals, you will dislike the remake; if you start with the remake, you will dislike the originals.

>it detracts from the core gameplay
All S3 haters keep blindly parroting this shitty opinion with absolutely no proof to back it up.
S3 has *NOTHING* less than the previous ones, not in quality nor in quantity. It only has more.
>there's not a single minigame in Spyro 3 that I look forward to. All of them are garbage
The majority of "minigames" are not actually minigames at all, they're just the same as the rest of the game with the only exception that you have a precise goal to reach.
The speedway minigames are good enough
The skateboard ones are absolutely great
The other characters are also good with the only exception of Bentley.

Immersion

Reignited all the way. The biggest downsides in the remakes are aesthetic changes that go against some people's nostalgia. If you have no experience with the franchise they are the way to go.
Different user, but I only had played Spyro 3 when I played the Reignited Trilogy and I still really liked Spyro 1. It's less gimmicky and it feels like the DKC to Spyro 2's DKC2, since the worlds have a consistent theme through their levels.

Yeah

what happened with lxshadow

yes

The remakes are fine and control a lot smoother. You also don’t need to use the dpad to control it

How can someone have such fucking garbage opinions?

>Emulate PS1 Spyro 1.
This. FPBP.

t. g'nasty the g'norc

hes mad that people are realizing the first game is the best.

>subverted the artstyle
they made spyro look like everything else, its an objectively less creative artstyle.

Remake is pretty good

Yer, see spyro is a clear 1>2>3. 3 has way to many gimmicks and 2 while a lot of fun has some pretty boring tasks and the 3 new moves spyro gets (swimming, climbing and ground pound) barely add anything to the game

1 is a clean and fun game with some very nice PS1 era styles and soundtrack. Again the main thing that holds spyro back in the whole series is how basic his movement is

the change of making the gem finder available in all games by default is enough for me to not be able to go back to the originals. It was the one major flaw the games had with trying to 100%

Spyro 1 is fucking shit
Shit graphics, shit level design and shit collectibles

Spyro is one of those few games that actually became better after shoving dumb gimmicks and minigames into it. Without it, you just have a bland 3D platformer with a glide mechanic.

Zera is fucking shit
Shit graphics, shit level design, shit collectibles

Reignited is a good place to start for the QOL changes alone.

where the fuck did that come from, that little game is pretty fucking sick though so fuck you

where is the dragon cock mod

original vs remake is barely different except for analog camera in remake and the different art directions
both are great and both should be played

you are a literal faggot with no talent.

I read that in tail's gets trolled voice
