Everyone says it gets good at heavenward but there's this long ass quest line before that expansion that always filters me so I've yet to try. Maybe one day.

not that dude but the internal politics in the game are well thought out and interesting. Theres this shadowy evil cloaked group thats basically Organization 13 yet even stupider. The fandom seems convinced the new story redeemed their story or made them interesting but it didnt it at all so overall its a mixed bag. Ultimately that means a part of the story will likely resonate with most people and because theres so much of it there you should be satiated by it.

As much as everyone shits on Nomura, I haven't really felt like anything was insta shit that I played. Disclaimer: I waited to get the Royal Edition of FFXV. It was great, felt like a full game. I can see how players felt cheated with base FFXV.
FFVIIR was, at best, a lot of salt over the marketing direction. The main fuck up with it as a work in an already existing universe was the over saturation of Sephiroth.

I started playing a month ago and currently 180 hours and at the start of the second expansion. ARR and post ARR are generic as hell with the latter being borderline unbearable despite it being shorter than it was. The lead up to Heavensward and Heavensward itself is really good. It is nothing groundbreaking but the experiance is a great RPG story with the music being 10/10. The thing with XIV is they do not shy away from fucked up things and it is kinda of crazy how violent and dark the world is. HW is great and would have made a great main number FF story

The XV team is busy making Project Athia, so there's hope. Insiders say that XVI is being developed by the XIV team.

Id say you wade through 20% kind of mediocre writing that leads to a really good story immediately after, and then after that the quality of all the stories are really good but also different, so different expansions will appeal to different people. Some people say not to, but I think buying a skip is worth considering if you genuinely care.

The main fuck up with VIIR is not the hamfisted Sephiroth shit, it's the fact that it doesn't feel like a complete game at all and there's nothing engaging to do outside of the main story.
