How is Doom not 3D if it looks 3D and the game is clearly 3D??? Apparently it's actually a top down shooter but... no it's fucking not?
My head is hurting
it's zoomer fanfiction, don't listen to that shit, a Z-height is obviously calculated because you can fall, projectiles can fly over your head, and you can place monsters on certain z-heights
just because there's vertical autoaim and the actors are infinitely tall for some optimization, does NOT mean that Doom is not 3D, those claims are fuckin' retarded, and batshit insane.
Didn't that guy off himself?
He means how the original was programmed, the game is essentially a 2d game that works as a 3d game
No, he's just hiding in a bunker.
There's actually a book about that but basically its not the same kind of 3D as quake.
huh?
The original DOOM takes place entirely on a 2D plane. Some of the graphics are warped to give the illusion of up and down.
I haven't played DOOM in a long fucking time but I couldn't sworn some of the later levels had verticality
All images are technically 2D, including your eyesight. You are just tricked into believing what you see is 3D. This is how illusions can be made.
No, it's still a 3D game, but it can only render polygons of varying sides as ceiling and floors. The walls and horizontal surfaces are all rectangles.
>Apparently it's actually a top down shooter but... no it's fucking not?
Correct, because height can actually make a difference in traversing the level. You can hate on Doom 2 as much as you want, but "The Pit" is a great example of this.
They do have verticality, but not in the way you know. The game is programmed in such a way that it renders out height levels, you can go up and down and whatnot, but terrain cannot go under or above each other (at least in the true vanilla version) because the actual geometry is 2D in the engine, you can just set height levels for the various sectors.
it's an FPS that plays the same way as a 3D game, it's a 3D game. That fucking simple
>It's not 3d, it just has a Z-axis is all!
I'm pretty sure the definition of "3d" is "object that has 3 axis."
It's more to do with the rendering. you can kind of simulate it via some very simple ray tracing. Basically you have a 2D top down map and the fov tells you what you're seeing in the map as you follow from the player vision cone out to whatever you're looking at.
>The original DOOM takes place entirely on a 2D plane.
So does your house, reality just supports floor over floor technology.
>because the actual geometry is 2D in the engine, you can just set height levels for the various sectors.
Please stop. You can say it's limited 3D, but get that 2D shit out of this thread.
it's 3d just not fully featured 3d. that's why the "2.5d" term was invented to describe it better.
Is the idea that because the controls are strictly 2D and are as limited as limited as a topdown twinstick shooter that Doom is also a 2D shooter?
Because that's absurd to anyone who played any of them: Doom is not Wolfenstein3D with basic 1-floor levels. It's an entirely different circumstance if discussing engine limitations at the time.
such a retarded, pointless argument entirely based around semantic nonsense. You OBJECTIVELY are moving in 3 dimensions in Doom, at the very least you have the illusion that you are moving along 3 dimensions. Therefore it is a 3D game.
You’re 3D, the world is not. This is a good example to how dooms map functions.
You arent "tricked" into thinking you see 3D. Your brain interprets 2 different 2D images and interprets depth from that. Its not a trick, its the system functioning how it was designed.
Something like those 3D eye puzzle things are a trick, because the image itself isn't actually 3D.
Short version is that the maps don't have proper z axis data, instead you just set a floor height and ceiling height, and z-axis is ignored for a lot of calculations like item pick up. It's 3D but it's kind of half-assed 3D.
yeh basically
this is so gay, and yeah technically 3d games dont even fucking exist because all screens are flat and the final render is 2d.
bravo
what if i'm not 3d?
Those are both 2d.
Its just faux intellectual shit.
Like that idiot who was trying to argue that player characters don't move through the game world, they stand still and animations play as the entire world moves around them. People trying to get philosophical over fucking video games. Who gives a shit, and also you're fuckin wrong.
extrapolate from the data, like a CAD drawing. Imagine the blocks floating over each other, but you can move forward/backward and left/right.
that's stupid because your position coordinates change in every game engine and you're an actual "object" in the game world. Does the game world also move around every OTHER game character, like NPCs, instead of them moving?
yea, its the same as that "half" a press garbage
If you say that one side of that drawing is a representation of 3d while the other isn't you are wrong. If you limit it to the actual dimensions they are both 2d, the right side isn't 1d.
Yeah I know its completely wrong reddit-tier retardation. But so is most of the pseudo-philosophical shit you see online.
Its like those "deep lore" threads about Mario 64. I dont know how much of that is genuine and how much of it is a bunch of dipshits just posting the same shit over and over, but its seriously autism.
