See the problem is, Coco is an anthropomorphic Bandicoot from the 90’s. Her design is fundamentally based on 90’s trends and looks.
It simply wouldn’t look good these days but they still pretty much have it all there

You're exaggerating. 4's Coco isn't nearly as overly designed as that Mario redesign, she has nearly identical clothing with the exception of a belt, bracelet, and knee patch. He's got a realistic but deformed look with the realistic gloves, detailed boots, detailed buckles, plaid shirt and distracting tool belt, while Coco is still cartoonishly simple. The only comparison in the clothing is the patch and seams. And before you say it. she's always had the laptop.
They've also made Mario's face way less expressive. They've kept Coco's face pretty similar in theory, but with big eyelashes.
The biggest complaint about Coco is how triangular her over all body shape has become, that Mario has barely different proportions, the limbs are slightly shorter and the head a little bigger.
