I love SH way more and RE has a lot more shit games, but RE also got way more good games. For SH, only the original trilogy and Shattered Memories is really worth a damn. For RE, there's a plethora of godawful entries, but there's also more than a handful of great games too. I hate to say it's quantity over quality, but in this case I'm going with RE. It's a difficult decision regardless.

Silent hill is more mature, the concept and atmosphere of 2 and 3, but especially 1 (the best) gives the entire series a high ground over the entirety of the biohazard franchise.

That being said however.. when it comes down to consistency in quality and release, as well as the fact that Re is relevant and alive while silent hill died with 4 and kept on dying with 5 (which is the only western made one that at least to a degree felt like silent hill) and 6 and Hills...
Well, Re takes the prize under these terms.

These two series, together with Half life, make up my personal "Gaming trinity". These are the games which you need to play to understand gaming as a whole.

Either way I choose resident evil.
More action and panic inducing horror.
Also helped spawn dino crisis and devil may cry.

It's definitely the more "essential one".

SH2 is the worst of the first three games. Garbage enemy variety and puzzles that are either too easy, or basically impossible on the hardest riddle difficulty. James also controls the worst compared to Harry and Heather. SH1 is much faster paced, and SH3 added some interesting combat mechanics, like laying down meat to act as distractions and a very simplistic parry mechanic. You don't really need any of this, but I think they're cool additions regardless. SH2's story, characters, and environments are good, but that's about all it has going for it. As an actual game, it's much weaker. Also, SH3's voice acting (the original, not the shit "HD" port) is godly good and I feel like it doesn't get enough respect.
