Videogames - the ultimate entertainment medium?

Compared to other mediums such as film and literature...
Do you think there's a possibility in the future that video games will eventually come to surpass them, and effectively render them obsolete? Or will it continue being it's own thing, and leave the "harmony" undisturbed?
Are there certain qualities found in other mediums that you believe video games will never be able to fully replicate?

This is something I've been contemplating about. From the way I see it, video games are honestly still pretty young. The medium is constantly evolving with each passing year and has yet to reach its TRUE potential, its Citizen Kane or whatever, but I think right now we do have a pretty clear idea of what they're capable of. You have books, a visual medium, then you have films, an audiovisual medium, and then you finally have video games, an audiovisual medium defined by its interactivity.
see Video games provide you with a level of agency, they allow you to directly take part into the action and influence the outcome as you see fit, it creates a feeling of immersion that's arguably unmatched by both literature and film. Look no further than RPGs, take Fallout: New Vegas as an example. You could describe each playthrough as a new movie, lol. This is all on top of other elements that help to enhance the experience such as environmental storytelling, music, art design, etc.

I don't know, what do you all guys think?

No one will take it seriously because they're called games

Flavor of the month waifu whoee

I am 100% sure that video games have already stagnated. Anybody that has kids today, their kids will be playing the same type of bullshit with 0 advancements. Nobody innovates anymore because the entire industry has been commercialized.

Video games are already like that today. They are unironically the biggest medium out of all and also make the most money of them too. The movie industry is dying and nothing good is being put out on TV these days, especially after GoT ended. Zoomers cant handle literature because of their attention span too and books are dying for more digital versions which at that point makes someone rather just watch something visually instead. The only reason why video games feel less popular than it actually is is because of the boomer crowd who rule most of the media that dont get and/or respect gaming enough to put the attention to them. The moment millennials are the new boomers and boomers die off, gaming will be the biggest thing in the world 100%. The only medium that can compete is music and maybe sports

OH SHIT NIGGA

that's how you know it was fotm garbage

Vidya is the medium that can include all the others.

Easy breedy. Matey pressy.

I agree, video games are Wagner's wet dream, they merge literature art and music togheter to create something that can resonate with the viewer more than any other medium.

You can't get a single experience isolated so you appreciate specific aspects less intimately. As a general rule I think that since they try to incorporate multiple mediums, it's harder to insure the quality of all of them

Kanamori is so fucking hot. Goddamnit.

Well...A TOAST! A TOAST TO THE VIDEO GAMES!

I want to lick Kanamori's sweaty hairy pits

It's why I find it weird that Zig Forums is so dismissive of VR. Sure, it's still in its very early stages, but people are kidding themselves if they don't think this is the next step for the medium. The level of immersion, and most importantly, interactivity you get in HL Alyx is fucking incredible. Probably a case of sour grapes.

That's my fetish dude, go get your own. only one guy can have her pits

I don't think it's about the merging of several other mediums, but the obvious fact that games are interactive, so the people playing them are active participants, meaning that whatever they do or don't do in games is an expression of themselves.

A dignified man of culture.

>hehe salty hairy kanamori pits tickle my tonguey-tongue

Imagine making a videogame with Kanamori managing you.

Whats wrong with putting your grasses on?
Nothing can go wrong, so tell me why.

>Probably a case of sour grapes.
Because it won't be playable in our lifetimes.

I think that interacting with art forms should be more about experiencing the thoughts of others rather than expressing oneself.

how the fuck is she so hot god damn it man

there will always be people who can't enjoy something unless they have their hand held through the whole experience, IE watching rather than having any input. There are certain 'movie games' which appeal to this crowd, but I don't think they'll ever take over the full visual medium of telling stories, because some people REALLY just want the story to be told to them and not have to do a QTE every couple of minutes even if you and me think that's functionally the same thing

likewise books will always be a viable medium because some people prefer any of the vast number of advantages books have in terms of telling a narrative. Some people aren't as visual or twitchy, and even books and visual novels that appeal to 'book people' have failed to suppliant books, despite the technology having existed long enough for such a thing to be a reality.

but it's a stupid question regardless because there is no 'ultimate' medium. People have widely different tastes and will always enjoy a wide variety of things. Fuck, the most popular way of enjoying video games currently is STREAMING and watching other people play video games, and not even playing yourself. Imagine that, the full brunt of interactive technology in the year 2020 is ultimately reduced to a movie/television show in the end anyway.

Wouldn't that get in the way of player freedom though?

I'm talking about art in general. But when it comes to that aspect, games really are unique and allow for more freedom. But still, you can't replace the substance with freedom alone.

Kanamori is gender swapped anime Styxhexenhammer. Prove me wrong.

Holy shit.

"holy shit" what? you only just realized Kanamori is a homely Satsuki with glasses, freckles and a cartoony smile?

I can't argue for film and television, but literature still offers the unique first person subjective thought process point of view, which has yet to be translated correctly into video game format. Novels like Jane Eyre or The Catcher cannot be translated into film or television either, the perspective simply does not work in other mediums. Although I don't doubt as technology progresses, the other mediums, as well as video games, will bow down to VR, the ultimate interactive fictional format to ever exist.
