If FF8 came out before FF7 then the roles would be reversed

it's my favorite

I think Squall was a big problem since the protagonist in the prior game was also a moody introvert with interpersonal issues, but what makes Cloud's personality compelling is that it's not him. He's just traumatized and takes on another persona as a coping mechanism. Squall on the other hand just seems like a prick. I do think there are compelling aspects of his personality but he's not developed well

It's a good game but not a good FF game.
Story is not that bad and the settings for the first half is quite good, then eveything start to fall apart. Problem is that even in other FF games story starts to get fucked up, but the cast still support the story. In FF8 the protagonist is boring and/or irritating and Rinoa is a hit or miss and the rest of the cast is mostly...forgettable. The junction system is another thing that is a hit or miss (and for me it was mostly a miss). The only saving grace of the game (for me) was Laguna.
Fun fact: FF8 was my first final fantasy.

I still like it better than FF9, something just didn't click with me with that game.

FF8 is probably the one I would most want to see a remake for next (actually FF6 is, but I just don't think there's enough of a financial gain to making a remake)

when I was a kid, I didn't understand the game's systems and why I was doing so little damage. Kind of tempted to revisit it as an adult, but also kind of not.

No it's shit

Me too. I thought the levelling was good enough to make me strong, but guess what? Enemies scale level with you. Didn't understand that way back and I stopped at the spaceship part.

Uematsu was really on point with the soundtrack I thought, but he pretty much always is.

Disk 1 - The best FF has ever been.
Disk 2 - Still good, though the forced Rinoa shipping is bad.
Disk 3 - Game completely falls apart, trying to force Rinoa.
Disk 4 - Now that the game has gotten over the forced love story, it gets good again.

Game would be the best FF ever if you just removed Rinoa. And it's very easy to do, since her real only connection to the plot is being the daughter of Julia, the path Laguna didn't take. And there's no point in showing a connection to her anyway. Just give that time to Raine and Laguna.

1. Every single option action has an "Auto" feature.
2. It's very simple to understand.

Enemies do not scale 1:1.
You leveled up Lv.12-13, you gained 9 Atk and 6 Def.
Foe leveled up Lv.12-13, it gained 1 Atk and 0 Def.

It's not like "grinding level" had ANY WORSE EFFECT on you than basically any other RPG. The enemies you were fighting (like, say, by the "spaceship part") were JUST AS STRONG for being found LATER IN THE GAME like all other RPGs.

That's just a lost in translation problem
In the jap version squall isn't all ..whatever at everything

>shitty, overly complicated “junction system” that turns magic into both a consumable item and stat-modifying accessory
>stand there and spend 50 turns drawing magic from enemies to stock up, so fun
>whiny edgelord protag with no chemistry with the annoying main love interest
>annoying main love interest is also the obnoxious cause of every problem in the plot
>no real depth, subplots, or focus on the other characters
>bullshit hack-writer twist when all of the characters revealed to be raised in the same orphanage but GFs caused amnesia
>possible to get softlocked if you aren’t diligently leveling up everybody equally, which doesn’t help if Squall is the main, playable character 90% of the time and the enemies level up alongside him
I am hoping for a “Remake” treatment.

Of course they got stronger as the game progress, the fact is that from what I read and remember enemies scales better than you, 'cause you're supposed to use the junction system (which can be used to basically nroke the game as early as the first part of the first disc).

god i want to be whipped by Quistis while the Balamb Garden (or FH theme) plays

The purpose of the game is that GFs drain your life from you and cause you to forget about what matters. Never forget this lesson lads.

Wouldn't the Remake treatment make it a worse game though

>the fact is that from what I read and remember enemies scales better than you,
1.
>the fact is
And the truth is, that "fact" you "remembered" is false. Enemies DO NOT "scale better" than you. Quite the opposite; they increase their stats along with their level and a CONSIDERABLY worse scale than your SeeD party. They scale AWFULLY. You outperform them, zero junctions whatsoever, to a far better degree. Adding fully powered 100 Magic Junction, and they're a complete joke.

2.
>'cause you're supposed to use the junction system
Indeed! The Junction system is ALSO LIMITED, however, due to the fact you only begin the game with 2 GFs, and neither of them can boost more than 1 Stat each. And, your entire party must share your acquired GFs...which are not all obvious to their locations. In fact, at least half of which are actively HIDDEN from the player altogether. "Using the junction system" takes time and investment, and it does not apply to every party member and all their stats.

3.
>(which can be used to basically nroke the game as early as the first part of the first disc).
VERY true! So, DON'T USE A WALKTHROUGH ONLINE GUIDE to break the game.

As a product, the consistency of "...whatever" is a better phrase for Squall.
For the story, it's basically the same anyway.

>Enemies do not scale 1:1.
So many people don't know or care about this. For example, in FFIX, when you're going through the Burmecia sewers there's a Moogle at the base of a vine talking with Stiltzkin. If you go up that vine, the Moggle screams "holy fuck dude what the fuck don't go up there, the enemies up there will eat your ass, they're way strong than you!!!!!" And it's true. A lvl 60 Grand Dragon will eliminate your party in one hit, because you're maybe level 20 at best. And if you grind and work through things etc. etc. and find some way to kill that lvl 60 Grand Dragon, holy shit do you level up into the 40s in one-go. And you can do it again, even easier. Now you're level 50 and the other members who died last time are also level 40s. Fight it again. You're grinding a level 60 enemy and getting massive exp in the beginning of Disc 1 and you're good-to-go, nothing else in the game is gonna hurt your massively over-leveled Garnet/Zidane/Vivi/Freya. OHKOs forever.

But if this was FFVIII, that same moogle in the same situation would scream the exact same words, but the reason you're gonna get your ass handed to you isn't because the Grand Dragon was level 60, it's because it was a fucking Grand Dragon. It's the same level as you, but damn is it stronger than you are. It's a late-game monster, you weren't meant to fight it, then.

I like FF8. And the OST is fantastic.

i mean it's okay

the story has some good moments but it is also a giant nonsensical clusterfuck filled with bad dialogue and enormous asspulls, especially the "oh wow every major character in the game actually grew up in an orphanage together and forgot about it!"

the draw/junction system is hot garbage

some of the characters are really bad

there's just a ton of really bad flaws plaguing the game. it's still enjoyable as an ff game but it is nowhere near as well written as ff7 and the combat system is infinitely worse.

>grew up in an orphanage together
Most barely spent any time at all together.
At the age of 4 or 5, Zell was adopted by a family in Balamb. He joined the Garden more than a decade later. He began using GFs.
A few years later, Selphie and Quistis were also adopted by families. Selphie joined Trabia as a sort of boarding school by around middle-school or high school. She began using GFs for years. Quistis joined Garden more for the career it offered as she was already well-educated and capable, she spent less time at the Gardens than almost everyone. She did, however, begin using GFs intensely.
Irvine was also adopted at some unknown time, but he never joined a Garden. He was simply a mercenary sniper. He never used a GF and his 5-year-old memories were as clear that your 5-year-old memories. He didn't say anything about it.
Squall and Seifer never became adopted and were simply transferred into the Balamb Garden as soon as Matron's husband got it up and running. They've been using GFs as soon as possible and simply write off their "memories" with each other as rivalry since the beginning. Hell, Squall actively tries to not remember his childhood traumas and bad situations.

So, I mean, yeah they once resided in the same white Mediterranean orphanage at one point, the youngest times of their lives, but only Squall and Seifer "grew up" together. And they don't give two shits about each other. Cid and Edea were too scared about screwing up their plans for the future to tell Squall anything else.

Shame on FF7 and 8 for convincing a generation of one day incels that girls would be drawn to them if they had no personality and just stood there like an impassive rock acting like they didn't give a shit about anything.

n-not me but surely some guys were convinced...

It's one of the best games ever made. I think people are starting to come around to it.

>Ultimecia is persecuted in her present for the actions of her future self, which presumably are known about because of the stories that people told about her and her time traveling antics

so who was the real villain, the woman who hadn't committed any crimes yet or the people who told stories of something that hadn't happened yet?

Attached: contemplative jazz music.jpg (480x360, 16.46K)

>so who was the real villain, the woman
Yes.

is this conjecture or related to some additional materials outside of the main game? I don't really remember anything hinting at this, she might not have been such a bland seeming villain if she had a well developed motivation

Fear of Witches

Adel acting as world-dominating dictator in the most advanced country on the planet, going to war with everyone, didn't help.

Attached: ultimecia.jpg (3083x4504, 1.97M)

True.

FF15 showed it could be A LOT worse

How did Seifer manage to get away with everything?

>. And if you grind and work through things etc. etc. and find some way to kill that lvl 60 Grand Dragon,
>lvl 60

It's def one of the top5 in the series

Disc 1 is the peak of Final Fantasy
