Why was Life is Strange so good, while Life is Strange 2 was so bad? What went wrong?

Technically 2 was a much better game. The first one had atrocious pacing at times and felt really rushed towards the end.
Obvious I still much prefer 1 because of personal preference, but, you know. Technically. They didn't do a bad job with it. It's just that the first one catered to and created a fan base the second didn't appeal to.

The real bad game was that Before the Storm thingy. It combined the bad aspects of both main games.
And also had some literal-who mouthbreather voice best girl. Really dropped the ball there.

if you play BtS first and start with Farewell, the rollercoaster is pure kino all the way to the end of LiS1

I felt like before the storm episode 1 & 2 were fine enough and showed why Amber was important to everyone. Then Episode 3 fucked everything up and just slammed a quick ending barely tying up the main plotline. Completely awful episode

Life is Strange is pretty okay if you just turn your brain off and don't take it too seriously, but 2 wasn't a dumb teen drama in the same way that I liked

I agree, on a personal level I was always kind of hoping that they tied Rachel into the supernatural aspect of the world and they really seemed to be hinting at that with the fire, it would have gone a long way towards explaining how the events of LiS1 got rolling. But then they just kind of ignored it or forgot about it?

I guess, but that seems like a way to spoil much of LiS1, namely all that mystery surrounding Rachel and meeting Chloe the first time. I'd imagine it'd feel bland if you basically knew everything about Chloe already when the game's designed to let you get to know her gradually.

I've heard this before but don't understand it. I thought the new girl was terrible, especially somewhere starting around the midpoint.
She starts way overdoing the shaky breathing thing. I thought it was extremely noticeable and annoying. Really ruined the whole game for me.

Totally the opposite for me, it felt even better to see her again after playing BtS and made me like her even more to the point of choosing without a doubt the bae ending
Playing BtS first also made it feel like LiS1 was actually Chloe story mostly, even if in LiS1 you play as Max. It all went around her, and I actually liked that a lot

In retrospect, the blue butterfly was criminally on the nose.

lis1 was good because it had a fun mechanic (time manipulation) and BTS and LiS2 didn't. that's all there is to it. and Dontnod know this, that's why their new game seems to bring back a variation of the time manipulation mechanic back.
