Japan is extremely xenophobic to foreign products with the exception of some really gay shit like RWBY. Same goes to a lesser extent for Korea and China. Because of this the eastern market is dominated by Sony and that doesn't look to change.
The more capitalist-dominated western market, especially the US, has much less brand loyalty and generally always goes for the cheaper console. By the end of the previous gen, PS3 and Xbox 360 numbers worldwide were roughly even but 360 still dominated in America.

The average console buyer is a parent of a kid. They always go for the cheaper console that can play CoD.

PS3 was also a cataclysmic failure in revenue. Sony operated roughly the whole gen in the red. The various PSN hacks resulted in many selling the console back to retailers. As others have mentioned, sony stopped reporting accurate sales numbers to hide this.

Absolutely nothing killed the 360. The PS3 simply had much more footing in Japan after the turnover they did with Final Fantasy XIII and the Slim release.

Those 8M consoles they sold over there made the difference.

What happened is 3rd-worlders could finally afford a console near the end of the generation, and for some reason they all went with Sony, which kept selling PS3 FIFA bundles well after the PS4 launch in 2013. So in the end, yes they did sell more PS3
