Lance is fun, blocking everything and strategically poking back. But nothing beats playing whack-a-mole on a monster's face with my hammer.

The Charge Blade is the best melee weapon. It does literally everything: quick combos, big swings, guarding, and explosions. There is no better weapon.

I feel like the Sword and Shield of all things is due for a guard point. The shield bash heavily reminds me of the shield parry from Zelda Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild. If you time it correctly you should be able to parry things and weave it into your combo. The followup second bash is even great as a counter attack if you parry successfully and don't stagger.

There should be a separate weapon which is just an Axe. Combine the axe parts of Switchaxe and Charge Blade and make it its own weapon. No vials, no meters, just good old fashioned axe swings.

I wanna get into this series, I want to start with the early games but I've heard plenty of criticism regarding the first generation.

It's "weak" because it's not as fast as the swords swings. It still gives you better mobility and range, as well as options to close gaps.
