How would you think a Blaster Master Zero 3D game would play like?

Yes. It's a solid improvement over 1, both in worlds and in mechanics... but I feel like they can go further with the formula. They've followed the mold of the NES game very very closely, and I feel like they need to do some things to reinvent it now. All the game needs to keep is on-foot and tank sections. But everything else should be shaken up.

True tank controls and this fast arcadey game are probably incompatible, but I feel like it's absolutely required for 3D.

I found BMZ to be a total slog but I enjoyed the gameplay enough to get to the end. If Z2 is really that much better, I'll probably get it and play it

In 1, the optimal strategy is just the best gun you have access to, to the point the best one trivialized most boss battles. But in BMZ2, they have more of a strategy element where you want to use the gun for the situation (even if the highest tier gun is still plenty useful). So it's way more engaging and you'll want to keep your guns in mind.
