I just did the president rescue mission and ended up killing him in the end. I thought it was just scripted to be unavoidable but my brother mentioned that I can save him and alter the story. If I've not continued the story beyond that can I redo the mission and get a different outcome?

I've always felt that Ace Combat 6 is pretty underrated.

This user is right. Though it runs pretty much fine on pcsx2 at this point. 4 has a few minor graphical issues (big explosions showing as square graphics), but 5 and 0 are more or less normal.

idk how I would experience them otherwise though, I'm not about to buy old consoles just for a couple of games even though I would love to. Don't have that kind of money to throw around.

I always thought 4 was the best since I played it first as a kid. Replaying them this year, I like 0 better now even though it gets really cringy with those enemy pilot cutscenes. 4 still has the best super-weapon and that yellow squadron introduction, but 0's dogfights felt much more intense.

Even if you shoot down those last drones heading for Harling with your machine gun instead of using missles as the plot expects you to do, a plane behind you will shoot a QAAM missile at the Osprey, thus making the events play out just as you were the one that shot the missile.

You can start with any game, really. Start with whatever is accessible to you. If you have time and want to appreciate how the series has developed over time, play it in release order like already mentioned. You'll see that 2 has a massive influence over the series in terms of both game mechanics, mission design, and lore.

My personal "holy trinity" is 2, 3, and 4.

None of them are underrated they're all mediocre at best
