Green flag was out but race leader was holding up tje pack until he reached the start line (which is 100% legal) but the guys at the back just started back at full speed

The leader has up to the start line to decide when to start racing when the safety car has entered the pits.
In this case the leader was taking his time and some of the guys at the back started taking off before he did.

Very difficult to say. From what I saw it looked like George Russell in one of the Williams cars slowed down and created a gap, then sped up all of a sudden in preparation of the restart and everyone behind him, who couldn't see the leaders, thought the racing had started and also floored it.
It wasn't the fault of the guy leading (Bottas). He's literally got every right to take it easy until the line, as he's the de-facto safety car at that point.

The race was restarting under a safety car after an earlier accident.
Basically what happens when the safety car period is over and the race is about to restart is that the SC pulls off into the pits down the main straight and the race leader becomes the substitute safety car until he crosses the line, at which point racing starts again. The leader doesn't have to keep going slow until that point, though. He just had to remain slow in this instance to try and avoid the drivers behind getting in his slipstream and easily passing him down the long straight.

I'm having an insanely fun time with GT sport, I find it kind of sad that it's forgotten by Zig Forums as "that one mediocre game with no campaign, no tracks and no cars" despite offering the best online experience you can find besides iRacing. So forgotten you don't even see it used as consolewar ammo.
3 years later, there's actual content and all the essential cars and tracks that were missing were added, as well as some actual single player stuff.

GT7 having the best driving & tuning model, and activities, and Vision showing off cool concept cars like they always have while Forza Motorsport 8 just looking better, and has a diverse livery system, but a gimped engine sounds that hasn't been good since FM4 but at least better than GT7

the only other option in that situation is to red flag the race and restart it from a standing start on the grid, which ironically is how the race was restarted after that carnage.
