But in the 90s & early 2000s most placed would have FF6 or FF4 as the #1

I've played 7 but not 6. How much better is it? Cause 7 had really odd pacing and you could tell they just ran out of time at some point.
FFVI is such a mediocre game, terrible combat and customization system, lots of underwritten characters with little to no depth, a terrible balance between party members. The only things I think it does really well is Kefka and the twist of the world of ruin and also the world of ruins open structure.

Much better pacing in my opinion. Battles are faster (mostly due to faster animations), less filler dungeons, and less useless dialogues (though at times it's a detriment since a few characters don't get enough development)
FF7 is awful when you try to revisit it now, not even a top 8 RPG on the PS1 in all honesty.
It's pretty much the perfect RPG, only flaw is that piece of shit Veldt that's too difficult to navigate and makes me want to quit playing every replay
