I buy some games that I really wanna play regardless of reviewers opinions as day one, for example I bought Tony Hawk 1+2 and Deus Ex Mankind Divided as day one.
If not buying day one then I wait for sales or just skip it entirely.
Unless it shows up on GOG and it's a really good game I liked then I buy it immediately. For example Control recently showed up there.
I hate PC piracy so I usually only pirate console games. I do look first to see if I can find cheap copies locally but for example some 360 games are hard to find so I just pirate. Would pirate more but my PS4 is too new of a firmware and Xbone has no hacks. My Switch is a full-fledged pirate machine though, only games I bought for it were on the day I got the console before hax.

Waiting to buy games a year later or when GOTY comes out seems more frugal. But I cannot, for the life of me. Wait that long. I feel like the only way you can get yourself on the groove of doing that is if you actually don't buy any new video games for 1 year, and then start buying them.
There's also the fact that there's less people to talk about the game after a year.
