It's supposed to be Kratos turning from an extremely angry prick into a levelheaded guy who wants to take care of his son but in reality the director changed that much, turned from "Let's give him an option to fuck women before more carnage, that'd be funny" into "this game is an allegory for my bond with my son", I wonder how long it will take until he says he hates the past games and how "immature" he was
To be fair, he mellowed out a bit after he murder-killed an entire pantheon of gods, and until the Norse gods turn as assholish to him as the last pantheon did with Kratos, he has no reason to be the "FUG EVERYONE KILL EVERYTHING" murder hobo he was before.

I think it's implied there's something seriously wrong with the nord pantheon, the greek pantheon was okay until Kratos opened the box and all of them got infected with evil and dickery, to the point the last fight in God of War 3 was Kratos beating the shit out of Zeus-shaped evil with his hope-powered fists, meanwhile the nord pantheon is about to get fucked by the ragnarok and the prophecy draws near, so maybe they're similarly just extremely afraid, minus being magically infused with evil

The triumph of the first trilogies' storytelling is that despite knowing beyond a doubt that Kratos is a monster of a man, his trials can still elicit pathos. There still exists a human element beneath all the bestial rage.
Never played nu-GoW myself, but I am still pretty pissed off with the marketing material they came out with about how the series was now "mature", basically shitting all over the entire (excellent) legacy of the series up to that point.

Genuinely if you can pick up a copy for like 5 bucks, it's not a bad adventure game. Combat's pretty good, nothing like the originals even when you do have the blades back, but it has its highlights.
The banter between Kratos, Mimir and Atreus when roaming the world is also pretty good

That's my problem with modern takes/reboots of good media.
Instead of just saying "hey we wanted to give something fresh to the series" etc. they recontextualize it that the previous parts were "products of their time" and "immature" or straight up bad and NOW we got it right, which is just shitting on the legacy without which the new one would not exist.
Even if i were a cuck and agreed that castrated Kratos is good or well written, i would HAVE to admit that without him first being a one-dimensional rage hobo that change and character would make no sense.

But he did let her die in order to punch Zeus one more time. I don't understand why people see Nu-Kratos and get mad that he is not a rage machine when GoW3 literally ends with him realizing his rage was all for naught, and ends up killing himself now that he has nothing to live, other than one last act of spite to Athena.
