I don't know what you guys are doing wrong, but I can use my internet just fine without subscribing to Xbox Live the same way I can use my internet without subscribing to Netflix or Spotify. If I wanted to use a premium service like those I would have to subscribe to them, but so far I have no Xbox Live, Netflix, Spotify etc. subscriptions and everything is working as intended.
