OP didnt mention it and even if we take it, that is still few games in one genre (that now have options to pay for subscription with ingame money) vs. paying for ANY connection. You cannot play F2P online games on console and you cannot have online features in games like BB or Dark Souls if you do not pay. This is inexcusable.

I have Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for two years and it only cost me $115.
That's access to M$ exclusives day one, tons of games I'd never buy, free games with gold, rebate rewards for playing/buying games, and I can now stream Gamepass games to any device that supports the app.

In any case, most pc gamers donot play wow (wow only has 844,500 subscribers), whereas any console player that likes playing multiplayer games pays for online.
For example, there are 90 million xbox live subscribers, meaning that most xbox players pay for online. Similar numbers for other consoles.
So really, console players do pay for a service that is free on pc.

Online play on consoles used to be free. Sony and Nintendo only started charging after they saw the 360 rake in free money.
I'm pretty sure a valid strategy to sell a console at this point would be going back to that free model as very few games are exclusives now a days.
People would absolutely buy the new COD on the new PlayStation over the new Xbox if it was free online on only one of those platforms.
