While I'm here, this surreal psuedo-religious is common place in fantasy. Sci-Fi and Fantasy are secretly the same genre, and the mixing and matching of the two happens consistently.
The only difference is a choice of time and magic. Is it in the past? Probably fantasy. In the future? Probably sci-fi. Now decide if it's got magic, tech that is basically magic, or both.

TES was initially a custom pen and paper AD&D campaign created by a group of friends in the early 90s. Due to that it was far out of field compared to maisntream settings from the get go. Then as the setting was pushed to video games and generations of writers added their own stuff, plus some retcon, it became even more wacky.
