the level design of Mario 64 is just pathetic, even compared against contemporary platformers of the time.
>Left >random ugly shapes smooshed together with a few textures plastered on >generic skybox >Right >creative environment with multi-textured objects that actually resemble things like buildings and ships >lush pastel skybox
Don't care. Still gonna buy and consume it 22 years ago.

>Tries to compare level design >Compares the graphics and visual presentation instead

level design and art direction are two different things...
Cooper Cox
well mario 64 was the first 3d platformer of it's kind the fuck do you expect moron
Justin Morgan
Well if you want to get pedantic Spyro mpgs Mario 64 there as well. The level layouts are so tightly compacted and integrated that they are architectural marvels, particularly Breeze harbor where the Trolly minigame at the end is a dual maze making up the walls of the environment. Another good one is Mystic Marsh where you backtrack over some walkways and then go througha maze of submereged tunnels to get to the exit that is just out of reach of the entry point.
Well, what does it matter if they utterly failed anyway. Also why does it have to look like a platonic solids simulator just because of the level layout?

mario 64 is only liked because N64 fags didn't have many games to play on that console so they think this garbage flock is a revolutionary games while PS1 people had tons of good games to play
Lincoln Hughes
I wish ps1 games were still made I'd love to see modern game design fit within those constraints
Jordan Stewart
>they utterly failed None of the PS1 3D platformers (which weren't bad at all) had a gameplay and a level design that was as good as Mario 64's. Sure, it might not look as interesting, but except for some camera problems it plays better and has more ideas than most 3D games of today
Grayson Gonzalez
Cope.
Sebastian Evans
left takes advantage of all 3 dimensions, the essence of good platforming right is flat and boring
Samuel Evans
Another epic cope. I already described how Spyro masterfully uses the Z dimension
Eli Ward
Modern game design wouldn't work on PS1 since everything wants to be open world or have large levels and landscapes. PS1 can't do that because of limited system RAM and slow CD loading times. GTA III wouldn't work on the PS1 because the map would have to be split up into even more chunks compared to the PS2 version.
Ryan Thompson
Spyro levels are just a series of flat planes, pits and bridges for the most part.
Ian Long
I'll take abstract geometric jungle gym over faggy princesses playhouse anyday
Dominic Evans
Not when it comes to plaformers. A lot of platformers on the N64 got overlooked. Mario 64 is popular because it's actually very good.
Blake Parker
Mario 64 levels are series of slides and mountains
It might surprise you that I, being a Christian, do not incite people to commit suicide just because they like different video games than I do. I understand this is some pretty revolutionary morality for Zig Forums, but at least read before you post.
