Why hasn't a Diablo-clone ever surpassed Diablo II?

It sold very well and the base game, if relatively bug-free, would be a great start.

Poe adapted the genre but the DISGUSTING amount of transactions to make your character look better than homeless man default is nasty.

In the beginning I would have said it could surpass Diablo 2, but I played it a few months ago, it's bloated garbage now where the grind never stops becoming more and more of a slog.
And they just keep adding more and more shit that you'll have to go through if you intend to stand up to the ever increase end-game stats.

"PoE2" is going to share all of PoE1's features because it's essentially an expansion, meaning PoE2 will be even MORE bloated than PoE1 already is.

Path of Exile is something that had protentional, but was ruined by the morons to made it.

It had potential once and I used to love PoE but now it's an overloaded eternal grind simulator full of shit bugs that ruin every league, half controlled by the reddit mob of pissbabies (see how much they got changed for the current league already just by pissing and moaning), it's an MTX shitshow with $20-$30 skins and actual lootboxes and it gets by coasting on the fact that it has no real competition in the genre. I still want to fuck Bex up her fat cow ass though

Grim dawn is pretty good.

It's even worse than PoE. I've at least played through PoE a couple times. I dropped Grim Dawn in under an hour.

At this point NOTHING can be worse than PoE.

No it is fucking not, the game is a bloated mess covered in MTX.

Old Blizzard was good at catching lightning in a bottle, D2 is just another example of that. Eventually someone else will come along and manage to do it again, but as long as we're just aping a game that already exists we're not going to get anywhere.

Grim Dawn is literally the game Chris wanted to make but he kept fucking it up. It's the closest to a D2 spiritual successor we're ever going to get.
