This game was incredibly underwhelming. I had enough fun with it but don't really understand why it's held in such high regard, the rental gimmick was pretty terribly conceived and a bulk of the games content is ripped directly from A Link to the Past. Its dark world mechanics are less complex, the inventory is smaller, the progression systems are practically gone in favor of a glorified level select, it's hardly as good of a game as LttP despite being a psuedo-remake of it.

Also, Breath of the Wild was pretty superb and executed many of ALBWs new ideas better than it.

changing the formula of Zelda from dungeons to no dungeons is like changing the formula of Tetris to a first person shooter with absolutely no falling blocks. I guess it could be set in Moscow... Zelda was like 60% overworld gameplay and 40% dungeons when it first began and as the series went on it progressively turned into nothing but dungeons, and by the later 3D games most of the things that made dungeons interesting were completely gone. They were linear gauntlets of well presented block puzzles that'd hand you hints left and right and held your hand the whole way through, they're a far cry from the labyrinths the series used to have. I play Zelda for a streamlined ARPG with a Metroidvania progression system and charming settings, not for an AAA medieval Sokoban.

Breath of the Wild oversteered in its attempt to correct the franchises course but building the game around the overworld again saved the series from mediocrity. All of its best games treat it as a large component, Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Wind Waker are as memorable as they are for the attention put into their kingdoms and the secrets you discover in them.
