Because you could unlock new characters.

Because it had an entirely altered starting experience from the original so even if you had played it suddenly what you thought you knew was being flipped and you had to wonder just what else they changed.

>mysterious
>minimap that shows you where everything is in a level

Pick one

What's the definitive edition. Of mario's 64?
35 anniversary or DS?

Because it felt wrong on a ds

Neither, it's the original on N64 or the decompiled PC port. DS has horrible pacing and abilities locked behind characters, and the 35th anniversary edition has issues with sound and input lag.

The new mini levels felt so fucking weird, almost mystical

This image. I don't really agree with you honestly, I just am bugged by this still.

The decompiled PC port made by fans as it has widescreen support, 60fps support, modding support and you can customize the controls in the menu.

I'm not sure if I would call DS a definitive edition since it is held back a bit by DS limitations, but it for sure has the most content. 35th Anniversary is just a JP ROM of the original 64 game which actually messes up the iconic SO LONG GAY BOWSER line so I would just say the OG is the realest deal.

>you now remember this

"shit" =/= "mysterious"

What was up with those hats that can turn you into other characters? Has to predate the super crown by at least a decade

I hope someone remakes these for the PC port, they're so good. The beta levels also gave me the same vibe.

Maybe since a lot of parts of the game were arbitrarily altered for new secrets and mechanics, but I'd argue the original game's graphics made it more surreal. On the other hand, a lot of the bonus maps 64DS introduced are less grounded in design like the Bowser stages and Rainbow Ride, even if a lot of them were recycling assets and its multiplayer stages.

Did it? The original game has a sense of loneliness unrepeated in a Mario game since. Boos in backyard, ghostly Toads, a rabbit in the basement that disappears afterwards and a Lakitu you can only see in-game in a single room. That's it. Other than that Mario's entirely on his own, opposed to every other hub since where there's colorful NPCs up the wahoo.

SM64 DS not only has three other fully realized characters on top of Mario, it infests the facilities with the minigame rabbits on top of making Toads cuddlier and more prominent.

It still bring good things to the table but I'd very much hesitate to call it "mysterious" let alone more than the original.

Aside from the controls there is literally nothing wrong with this game.

The controls weren't bad you fag

black box was the L is real of SM64DS

There are only maybe three introduced maps that properly capture the feel of SM64.
The map where you rescue Mario, and a couple of silver star courses.

Having no analog stick is annoying.

I'd be more inclined to agree if switching characters wasn't so cumbersome and they made Wario funner to play as

That file screen looks so soulless

Literally everything they added fits with the original. The luigi haunted house area and the wario chill bully area are based.

There are all the hats in basically every level. Just go into the painting as yoshi so you can get all the characters

The one with 30 extra stars, 3 extra playable characters and several new courses.

Waluigi is real

Because it was based on a highly personalized copy of Super Mario 64. That explains why you can play as Luigi, Wario, and Yoshi, plus the extra stars.

Yeah but then you have Yoshi's gay voice and if you lose your hat you're stuck as Yoshi. They should have just let you choose your character at the start of the level.

>trusting the minimap to tell you everything you need to know
You are a sheep

would you be saying completely stupid shit like "the n64 is the definitive version" if that was the version that came after DS and got rid of 3 characters different playstyles, and several new missions and levels?

Based. DS is equal if not better to n64, and probably the best 3D mario game.

Look at those pixels, true soul...

I didn't care for most of the character unlock levels but I enjoyed the aesthetic of this one at least.

it was another quantum cpu test case where each cartridge gave people a slightly unique playthrough.
When you turn it on a dot chip enacts a neural link with your consciousness and parts of the game are streamed from the black research site.

>tfw you realize the ds version was the one with the soul all along

NTSC on console and CRT
