So a Japanese game I'm working on now has an unfortunate joke where the premise/punchline is basically just "lol being gay is weird/bad." I find it offensive and distracting, and honestly I kind of want to just remove or rewrite it. Like, even great writers can be callous at times, and even great works can be marred by bigotry and insensitivity. This is an unavoidable fact of life and something healthy to acknowledge. But at the same time I know this particular bit isn't really important to the overall narrative and will definitely bother a subset of readers. So should I push for it to be changed?

Going to assume you're not a troll and give you real advice. Let people be bothered, and let them direct their criticism to the actual writers instead of pretending to be a writer yourself. All you're doing by "fixing" this is insulating the writers from getting any feedback on this themselves. Don't trust yourself to have a full understanding of what the author's intentions are either. Everyone who reads it could come away with a different takeaway. Yours is not necessarily the only interpretation.

If you can, phrase things in such a way that that's still one possibile interpretation of the joke, but it's also vague enough to be interpreted in other ways. Then you've got the best of both worlds.
